Is the Passat Syncro rear bar better than the Rallye bar? What will you suggest for an optilmal tarmac setup?
quote:
Originally posted by Chris SThats my set up as well, and it works very well with the stiffer springs, btw the rear anti roll bar is available from VW in three flavours, thats standard at 18.5mm, Rallye/Passat Syncro at 20mm and a whopping 25mm diameter bar for the Passat Syncro with self levelling rear suspension,
The most popular option is leaving the front bar standard and fitting the 20mm rear bar, this gets rid of nearly all the understeer and gives nice almost neutral handling! this by the way is a direct swap, you just change the bar and its 4 mounting rubbers, to fit the 25mm bar you need to weld bigger bracket holders to the rear axle carrier.http://www.vwsyncro.co.uk/data/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=459
VegardMemberAnd the 1.9 Tdi block has both oil squirters and mounting lugs, doesn’t it? And it’s a tallblock.
That block is perfect for small bore turbo convertions with an ABF head on top of it.
VegardMemberThank you for constructive answers!
And now to the Syncro upgrade part, what is possible to uprade?
Who can do it?
Where can I buy parts?
How strong will it be?
Have anyone done this before?
And at last another tread about the same issue:

I am Vegard Holum, from Norway, 44 yrs, Mk2 addicted, 16v freak, interested in engine and drivetrain building.
Building up my first Syncro, engine is a 380 hp 16vt based on an ABF. Have started on a new engine, a 500 hp 16vt ran on alcohol.

I’m trying to optimize the Syncro system. What is possible to get out of it?
VegardMemberThat’s exactly what I aked you guys for spec suggestion for.

VegardMemberSo what is the best possible upgrade of the entire Syncro system if money is not an issue? And how much Hp and torque will it be able to handle?
Speak up, experts!
VegardMemberI got a mail from a VC specialist. He writes:
I have some factory OEM stiffer brand new VCs here.
But I think they make them stiffer by changing the amount of air, not
by using stiffer fluid. It is not generally very successful to refill your own VC for the
reasons I point out. There is no place to buy the fluid that I know of.

SYNCRO OWNERS WHO DRIVE OFF THE ROAD:
You only get to change your ring and pinions once every 10 years because that’s how long the average syncro transmission goes before its next rebuild. If you want bigger tires and more ground clearance start planning your higher number ring and pinion sets right now so you can take advantage of your next trans rebuild.

Have been in contact with them, but I prefer to upgrade the Syncro system if it is possible. The price will be approxamatly the same if I go with Quaife syncromesh, peloquin diffs front and rear, and do an upgrade of the VC.
A Swiss company does the VC upgrade, do anyone on this forum know who it is?

Yes they have. The interesting part is how much power the VR6 tranny can handle.

Since you know him, could you ask him abot the specs for drivetrain and suspention on his car. Both today’s specs and future plans are interesting.
VegardMemberBy the way, do anyone who know the specs for Spyros Panopoulos’ Mk2? Or any other Golf Syncro of this caliber?
VegardMemberIt is three Golfs that I know of that have powerful engines with the VR6 engine and trannys, the EIP-Golf, http://www.turbomagazine.com/features/0103tur_volkswagen_golf_vr6/

and Keith Risebrough’s Mk2, http://www.jkm.org.uk/vr6turbo.htm#All of them have approx 450 hp.
