Welcome, Gaz.
Trev16vMemberI don’t know of any symptoms, but I replaced the one in the front of my propshaft because it looked visibly damaged (see image in first post). However, after removing it and looking at it, I think that as a bush it would still have functioned perfectly fine. It’s just that the very front rubber lip with a spring inside, which I expect is a moisture or grease seal, was visibly damaged. But the tough nylon(?) tube inside and then the rubber material that bonds it to the outer metal tube was as good and solid as anything.
Trev16vMemberChris, do you have any of those heatshields left available? I’d like to take one if so.
By the way, does anyone see any reason why those generic boots that I ordered should not be suitable? As shown in the photo, there is a difference to the length of the part that covers the boot, but otherwise it seems functionally the same.
Trev16vMemberToday I finally (finally!) did this job.
I’m very grateful for Chris’s advice to use a hacksaw blade to cut a slot. I wouldn’t have thought it’d be possible to cut a slot in it by just holding a hacksaw blade in your hand unless you spent days at it, but I was surprised at how easily and quickly the slot could be cut all the way down the bush metal body. Once that was done, I just clamped it tightly in the vice and wiggled it out.
Then I used my 10t press to get the new one in. I went very carefully with this to avoid pressing it in too much. So that’s one job done!
Trev16vMemberThanks gents!
Chris, apologies for missing your question before about the cost of the flanges. I don’t have the figure to hand at the moment, but I think they were in the order of £100 for both, by Waterjet Precision UK Ltd. Their pricing was very cheap actually compared to other quotes. I’d need to dig out the exact cost though.
Few more pictures from Sunday night when I very nearly completed it. Just have a couple of areas to fill in still. (Excuse the shonky phone images.)
Trev16vMemberHi mate,
I’m starting to get work done on this again at last; the 16V Syncro manifold build that I’ve detailed in another thread is probably the biggest bit of work I’ve done for it so far. Determined to get the 16VG60 into it this year.

Trev16vMemberHere’s a poor image that shows the angle of the upper flange of the downpipe on my G60 Syncro.
Also note that the dampers (whatever you call them!) are located differently.
Trev16vMemberDefinitely not a G60 Syncro / Rallye downpipe, or certainly not one in original state; the top flange isn’t angled like the G60 Syncro / Rallye one (see my manifold build thread).
I have a Scirocco 16V cast manifold which I was almost going to use for my 16V Syncro conversion, and the G60 Syncro downpipe could certainly be made to fit it with modification – but would not fit as it is.
It must be a G60 Syncro downpipe as you say Chris but perhaps modified very cleanly using TIG and with exactly the same grade of stainless, or something…?
Trev16vMemberI do! Did you PM me on CGTI or Dubforce or wherever it was?
Trev16vMemberAbsolutely fantastic this is Chris, because I need some for the G60 Syncro as well. Many thanks.
I guess the UK distributor is going to have to be Heritage (BBT). However, is there any alternative way to get parts from Classic Parts in the UK? Only other way is via main dealer, presumably?
Trev16vMemberI just got on the blower to VW and, working from this list of parts you provided Chris:
quote:
P/N 4F0 501 387 Bolt M12 x 1.5 x 115mm
I used P/N WHT 001 682 which is no longer available!P/N WHT 000 708 domed nut
P/N 4F0 501 389C for the adjuster piece that sits under the nut
Oddly the chap said that 4F0 501 387 has been dropped in July ’06 and is now replaced with the WHT 001 682, which is kind of opposite to what you’ve said there. Whether his information on his system was accurate I don’t know. I’ll wait and see what actually turns up! Thanks again for posting all of this Chris.
Trev16vMemberI have made a mental note to check if my propshaft has the heatshield. Presumably it should do.
Trev16vMemberI bought both bearing ‘hangers’ new from VW earlier this year.
Trev16vMemberDo you want to send me your number, as I can text you about the bolts when I phone up on Monday then.
Trev16vMemberWhat do you mean regarding the Syncro needing a complete respray? Wasn’t it completely painted a while back? Have you discovered that, aside from the scuttle being damaged during the housemove incident, the rest of it is defective in some way?
If that’s what you mean then, well, you’d not be on your own: I’ve discovered that my G60 Syncro’s bonnet at least needs a repaint because of water that must have been in their compressor. So far the rest of the car looks okay many years after the paint, but I just hope no problems are lurking.
