I do. It is still attached to the rest of the boot floor, which is leaning up against a wall in one of the garages…!

After the above pointer I ordered the book as well. It’s an excellent read so many thanks for that.

Very nice job above by the way!

So there’s a fair few rusty areas but it’s not too bad. The filler flap area will be properly repaired with a repair panel and lead-loaded afterwards. I am going to be taking everything off the shell including engine because I want everything repainted.

I am thinking of unbolting the rear mechanical components (differential, wishbones etc) so that I can get those parts powder coated and fitted with new bushes and so on. While I am at it, can anyone suggest any servicing I could do to any of those parts while they are off? There are no issues with any of the syncro components as far as I’m aware and everything seems to work, but I would like to know if it is worthwhile replacing any bearings or whatever while everything is off. Or, are there any procedures I could take in order to check the condition of any components (such as bearings), propshaft flanges, and so on. Is it worth having the differential opened up for inspection and serviced? Or if it is okay, just clean it up, paint it and change the oil?

Suggestions for any kind of maintenance that is worth doing to the syncro gear or otherwise while the car is stripped would be most welcome. As far as the front end of the car is concerned, I shall probably have the gearbox inspected because it has been known to crunch a bit and I also fancy having the first and second gear modification done.

Fortunately I stripped a totally rusty UK-spec Syncro a while back and I still have all the running gear from it, so I could swap that old gear onto it so that it is still a rolling shell when it goes to the body shop.

    Time for an update!

The car is booked in to have a number of bodywork issues sorted out and then a complete respray (in original colour of course). I’ve found what I hope to be a very good place to do the work for me. Here’s the start of the strip down.

Are VW too expensive to get floor sections from or are they obsolete? I have obtained panels from VW before, such as those underside floor pieces that I showed pictures of earlier in the thread, and things like battery tray panels.

Edit: Oh, I just read the earlier post stating that VW want around £100 for them. Hmmm…

Wow, that supplier really has an excellent range of panels and I would be interested in some floor panels myself. It’s worth seeing if they’ll supply directly. I have had to patch up the floor pan in one of my MK2s but I have never been totally happy with it.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

What sort of condition is your Syncro in?

    Got any photos.

If it is of any interest to you, around a year ago I obtained from VW the brand new panels for the front jacking areas. I got them because one of my MK2s is in a similar state, but I wish to save it. These are the panels that join to the front of the floor pan and bulkhead underneath, that the jacking ‘dimple’ is welded onto. I got them for both sides. I suppose they might still be available. If you have rust problems at the front, then you might want these panels also. Of course, they weren’t cheap, at about £50 per side. The dimples cost just a few pounds.

I would be interested to know if you manage to get floor repair panels as well. However I think I will be able to get away with using repair pieces from a scrap MK2.

Chris – thank you, those are interesting pictures and it’s great to know that it is possible to do.

Is it a show stopper if a given block doesn’t have the mountings? Would it be possible to drill and tap into the block somehow, or even make a bracket that extends from the engine mount?

Sorry, I’ve noticed that we tend not to post pictures directly in here – apologies if I should have provided links instead.

    Hi there,

My name is Trev and I live in Oxfordshire. I have just bought a three-door Edition One G60 Syncro (dark burgundy pearl). It’s an amazing car and I never thought I’d find a MK2 of this specification for sale in the UK.

    Cheers

    Trev
