ModeratorYes that rod changebox you got from me before we set this site up over 6 years ago has lasted very well! [
]In fact that is how LD50 & I met, he came over to Holland to collect a gearbox from me as at that time none were available in the UK.
While he was here we discussed setting this site up, we went live on 14 april 2003 and the rest as they say “is history” [
]I wonder how many UK G2 Syncros are still on the road and have not been scrapped because of the help and information available on this site?

is it just a case of changing the gearing in the transfer box or dose the gear box have to be changed as well.
iv got 2 gear boxes ones off the rallye with the cabel chang but the transfer box needs rebilding the othere is standerd rod change an help would be grate cheers guys1) You cannot vary the power distribution as it is controlled by the VC unit, and there is no way to alter this.
2) When you say “rebuilding” what is exactly wrong with it? if it is the cast iron case version and has shed teeth then forget rebuilding, the only value is in the casing & end plates, the transfer gears have been dropped by VW a long time ago as have some of the bearings, [xx(]
btw the last price VW listed for the gears was over 600 euros a pair, and yes they are matched pairsChris S
ModeratorHere is what I pay for road tax for my Syncro with a petrol engine & a weight of 1070 kilos
For a private car of 25 years and older you pay no road tax. If your car 25 reaches years of age, then you (automatically) get reported that you must no more road tax pay.
Here is the same formula but with a diesel motor instead of petrol
Uitkomst berekening
Motorrijtuigenbelasting per kwartaal: € 230,00
Motorrijtuigenbelasting per jaar: € 908,00 [

ModeratorBecause then your log book does not have any engine details registered, so you can fit what engine you want, even a diesel, which is normally taxed at 3 times the rate of a similar petrol engined car, the dutch road tax (weg belasting) for my G2 petrol Syncro is now 415 euros per year, if I fitted an similar sized diesel motor my tax would then be over 1200 euros per year!

ModeratorUnfortunately the diff is the first thing that is fitted to the gearbox, which means you have to completely dismantle(and I DO mean completely) the box to get at it, I did this job a few years ago and by the time you have done it with new gaskets etc you realise it is not worth it,
Having said that though it should run with 150 bhp without to many problems as long as you are not flooring the throttle from every traffic light you see

ModeratorIts free tax here in the Netherlands for 25 year old cars as well.

ModeratorI just checked at the dealers and you need the original bolts listed and not the later ones, I have amended the post accordingly, sorry about that, we do our best but sometimes things slip through [
]The bolts you need to fit the channel as shown are P/N 4F0 501 387
I was previously told by the dealer that the original bolts had been dropped and the new ones were a direct replacement, it now turns out on checking again that that is not the case and the later bolts are to fit a factory modification to the rear suspension and have a different offset head diameter. sorry for the confusion [
