ModeratorI had my TRW rack reconditioned for 300 eu over here in Holland (7 or 8 yrs ago) I had to find a specialist who appreciated the difference between the TRW & ZF racks.
Let me look in my shed as I think I have a nearly new LHD Syncro power rack in there somewhere.
Chris S
ModeratorYes thats very helpful, it is an TRW rack from VW USA, it did come from a Syncro/Rallye as it was never fitted to any 2WD Golf. [
]My original 1988 Golf Syncro had exactly the TRW same rack fitted, after my original Syncro caught fire,
I removed it, and Shinya (G19 on here) is now using it to steer his Golf Syncro around Yokohama in Japan, I will have to ask him how many turns lock to lock he has? [
]BTW, it uses entirely different Hydraulic seals & track rods than the ZF type rack and the internal parts are not interchangeable between the two.

ModeratorThis P/Nr 191 422 055 is for an early Golf 2 power steering rack, it was replaced by 191 422 055R and finally with 191 422 061MX which was then dropped without replacement in 2007
(btw the suffix X denotes an exchange part, which means that your ‘new’ part from VW is actually a reconditioned item)
Research has led me to believe that the only difference between the SX & MX racks is the number of turns lock to lock, the SX version being the so called quick rack which supposedly has less turns lock to lock,
If anyone would like to count the turns lock to lock on their steering racks & post here (complete with model year & left or right hand drive I would be grateful, as we could hopefully sort this question out once and for all, same as we have with the 2 differing rear wheel bearing sizes.

ModeratorIts the output/input propshaft centre locator bearing, the VW P/N is 191 521 137
It is still readily available from VW as it is fitted to every Golf Syncro from the beginning in 1986 right through to the 2006 model. [8D]

ModeratorYes, without any problems
Chris S
ModeratorThe Passat one bolts right in, its the same as the Rallye bar, you are thinking of the Passat with the self levelling suspension, that bar is 25mm and does need new brackets
Chris S
Moderator357 511 409C but you will need to alter the centre mounting points & also all 4 brackets & rubbers
Chris S
ModeratorComplete with transfer box?
Chris S
ModeratorAsk Pascal (pvl)
Chris S
ModeratorFit the rear anti roll bar from the Passat Syncro, its a greater diameter & will reduce understeer.

Chris S
ModeratorWell, you can fit a higher ratio diff to your box, any 1800cc 020 diff will do, but be aware that it will increase the stress on all the gearbox components and may lead to an early failure. [

ModeratorIf any one wants a set of these? I can get them for you,
but please be aware that with the postage from Germany to my adress in the Netherlands and then the further postage to North America
they will cost a lot more by the time you receive them, an you will also probably have import duty at your end as well. [
