What ever you think it will cost in time and /or money? well double it and then add a whole lot more.

As for the work involved, you will probably need to swap the Vento rear floor for the VR6 Syncro one, I say probably because I dont actually know for sure, except to say that the Vento & VR6 Syncro have different part numbers for this, which means a different part, but how different is anybodys guess.

The cheapest way to start this project would be to buy a VR6 Syncro as a donor car, this will save a lot of headaches & extra costs later down the line.

Here is a link just to give you an idea

The G2 Syncro drum brake cables are 1580mm

The G2 2WD drum brake cables are 1535mm, 45mm too short

The 2WD G3 drum brake cables are 1495, 85mm to short

The G3 Syncro drum & disc brake cables are 1592mm, 12mm or 1/2 an inch longer than the original ones,

I think that these may be the ones to go for,

    p/n 1H0 609 721B for drum brakes
    or
    p/n 1H0 609 721C for disc brakes [;)]

I would suggest getting 2 of them while you are there as the other side will be not far short of breaking, especially when the new cable stresses it a bit more than it has been.

    Q) First of all, I know, from dealing with 4×4 Opel Calibras, that unevenly worn tires (front to rear) will cause problems w/ the 4×4 system. Is this also the case with the VW Syncro system? Do all tires need to be replaced at the same time?

    A) In an ideal world yes, but as long as you have the newer (more tread) tyres on the front you should be ok.

    Q) Second, I have some nice, shiny Raceland Coilovers for the Syncro sitting in my hallway, is it safe to slam a syncro like w/ normal golf? If not, how low can I safely go?

    A) if you “slam” a Syncro you get severe neggy camber on the rear wheels, the rear drive shafts are then not working at their optimum angle any longer either, this leads to what can only be described as interesting handling on corners, personally I would not lower any further than my car, as excessive lowering actually reduces cornering ability.

    Q) Third, common trouble spots. What are they, what are symptoms, and how much does it cost to replace them?

    A) Given the age of these cars rust is the main problem, + all the normal Golf 2 problems, + transfer box & rear diff problems, so please check your oil levels in the diffs as they probably have not been looked at since new.

Having said that these cars are in the main very reliable.

The VC cannot not make any noises, so it wont be that.

It could be the rear diff though, however these are in plentiful supply for 4 cylinder engine and there will be no difficulty getting hold of another one if it does happen to fail,

However the VR6 rear diff is notoriously difficult to get hold of and if your car is a 6 potter you should get it checked asap

Hi Derrik, Are you in Germany visiting, or do you live there permanently?
either way you should have no problems sourcing Syncro parts, ebay.de or mobiel.de are both good sources,
and I usually have 2nd hand parts lying here.

    On 01-12-2006 P/N 357 201 451 was dropped & replaced by P/N 7M3 201 451

    on 01-04-2007 P/N 6N0 201 451 was dropped & replaced by P/N 7M3 201 451A

These new numbers are both listed for the Sharan, the first for the petrol engine, the second for the diesel.
