> although this is going through a VPN
I just saw that from your post above – that might explain the comparatively slow speeds… I’m sure any kind of protocol tunnelling must affect speeds quite severely so 200+ is pretty good for the uk one.
ld50Memberok two new links – the one is from the dallas based ones but tbh I thin kit’ll be more likely that we go for the second link whcih is in the UK but comes well recommended by a friend.
What I’m looking for is whether you get a quick initial connection to it – (i.e. that it doesn’t take *aaaages* for the download to even start) and also what speed it maxes out at.
Bigger file from USA server:
http://66.128.49.250/speedtest/685meg.zipUK server:
http://www.anticulture.co.uk/temp/Malefice/VTS_03_1.VOB.zipplease don’t keep or distribute the file from the second link – I don’t know if it’s been released yet or whatever (not that screaming heavy metal is necessarily anyone’s cup of tea anyway).
cheers guys – I hope this testing will mean we get a decent connection
ld50Memberno thats true les but I’m also going to be literally uploading hundreds of gigs to it so it needs to be quick as possible from here…
ld50Membero/ so do we get to see a youtube vid of it in action?
ld50Memberhmm ok not so promibsing then I was looking for speeds over 500kb/sec really. That host is based in dallas so I guess it’s logical that it’s quicker for les.
DH: That is over wireless. How much difference would that make, B?
shouldn’t make any at all – even old wifi (802.11b) is 11mpbs which would still mean you could get over 500kb/sec unless you’re at the bottom end of the garden and only getting a partial signal….(11megabits/sec = ~1,38 megabytes/sec).
I think I’ll look for a host closer to the UK – might have found one in fact… trying to set up a test file on that network but waiting for responses from ppl.
ld50Memberok can you download this file please and see waht sort fo speeds you get?
http://66.128.49.250/speedtest/10meg.zip
I found it started around 300kb/sec and then climbed steadily to about 450 and then the file ended.
it’s only 10mb but there will be a bigger test soon.
ld50Membertdo you find its only on the first connection to the site or are subsequent pages also slow
I noticed on this server that sires sometimes take ages to load the first page but then are quick…I dont know why it does it but it does.
ld50Memberouch!
ld50MemberDoes everyone else concur with that?
I should be getting a test url tomorrow from a potential hosting company in the usa – I’ve asked if I can hammer a download form a few different points on the globe and see what our speeds are like before deciding anything re hosting… could I possibly have a few volunteers – I’m thnking holland, canada, bristol to test that link wehn it happens since this would also be potential new home of this site too and I want to make sure it’s up to speed.
ld50MemberCan you see if this is any better…
I jsut noticed the compile time at the bottom of the other admin thread was 7.5 seconds! Maybe this is better…

ld50Member> There probably is, but I’ve not had my sticky mitts all over this forum, so I’m not totally au fait with it.
DH do you need more access? if so let me know.
ld50MemberI’ve actually always felt quite strongly that the basic forum access should be free – also as soon as people are paying for a service they expect, and to a degree have rights on, a certain level of service which as a primarily voluntary organisation we may not be able to (or feel like) providing at the time. I’d much rather focus our efforts on developing it than administering minute quantities of cash.
I like where this is going with the site but it needs freedom and input to develop properly, not more admin.
I’ve actually been looking for a way to get more involved with linux and this could be it. As far as I know things are soon going to be changing once again for me in terms of hosting etc – in that i will almost certainly be running my own server which means I can operate much more efficiently than I’ve been able to so far with regard to hosting and web work in general.
I’ve been checking around a bit to see what our options are and we could potentially migrate the forums to a system called “community server” which does all sorts of clever stuff like photos, whos online etc and as far as I can tell it would just import our existing forum database so would require minimal effort but would probably bring us a lot of new features. Another site I using is making the exact same switch soon so I’ll keep an eye and see how that goes.
ld50MemberI’m somewhere stuck in between both arguments – it might also bring a whole new world of admin with it – which would also be counter-productive.
On a side-note – re the forum speed thing – I’m going to upload a copy of the site to a different server and see if that makes any difference. I’ll have to get you to test it though chris cos it runs fine here so I won’t be able to tell if it’s any better. Will post url here once it’s up.
ld50Membero/
ld50Memberwill it run on php etc under windows? I’ve not dealt with mysql before but there might be one on the network of the potential host I’m thinking of.
