it will be going somewhere useful. if I can figure a way of moving the shell I will, but I think it’s unlikely. worst case i have an estate car (definite), better case, estate + trailer. let me check my dates.

aha ok, battery doesn’t hold a charge. don’t have a spare so it’s another patience challenge till I can try again..

so today I just got time to whip the starter out and test it directly on the battery. Seemed to do the solenoid thing and turn ok so it’s not seized which is a good start. It wasn’t exactly enthusiastic but i had been trying the starter already and it hadn’t started with a full charge anyway.

When back in the car though it still just makes the click noise from the solenoid but no turning. There is almost a second click though so I think it’s trying to do it, but not managing somehow. The fit of the starter seemed ok too – not like it was wedged on an ill-fitting gear or something. It all came apart easily and went back together easily. given how long it’s been standing I forget how well prepared this engine etc is ;)

The charger arrived today but it’s not had a full charge yet. There’s a good chance the battery’s toast too so it could be either that, the starter, the wiring or any combination of those I guess.

I need to get some longer jump leads so I can try jumping it from the audi and/or a new battery I guess.

I have a g60 starter sitting there which looks like it might fit too. The 16v one looked noticably bigger

so I got the door servo and stuff back together ok, and I think just a freshly charged battery and we could be at the point of it turning over. I gave the starter a few whacks with the hammer to check it’s loose and I can hear the solenoid engaging but I think there was just not enough power to try and start it (or perhaps the starter’s kaputt).

At this point though the remote central locking + alarm/immob seem to work, dash lights come on and look relatively normal and it goes to start (solenoid engages and click but nothing more.

Sadly my current battery charger expired recently, and the jump leads wouldn’t reach from the audi so I’m waiting on a new charger before I can try again.

There’s still definitely some crazyness with lights being on which probably shouldn’t be on but then it’s still got half its electrical guts hanging out so I suppose that’s to be expected to some extent. All in all I’m finding it’s actually in pretty good shape. which is nice.

I still have the little loom for the ISV (which I have along with the controller) to plug in but as yet I’ve not found where it goes so any input there is welcome. I’m pretty sure without that it won’t run anyway but even getting it turning over would be a start.

It’s hard to express how excited I am at the prospect of this.

    at long last…IT LIVES o/

oh wow – I just replugged a few things in the back of the fuse box whilst trying to remove the alarm… and whaddya know, relays start clicking and it lives. Apparently the alarm & remote c. locking is still working. nice :)

Now I just have to put the door servo back in because I just finished removing it.

I was able to disable the alarm and hit the ignition and the starter made clicking sounds. Not bad progress at all.

ah right , no it’s just the mail sending which won’t work as planned… but I have an alternative solution (I have to have one regardless, for work)

the issue is about who handles email delivery rather than the forum setup, so unfortunately it would apply pretty much the same whichever forum setup we use.

tbh I was never really a fan of phpbb. The way the “active topics” thing worked always seemed a little off to me though obvs just a personal preference.

I actually quite like the new test forum setup as it is, I can read it and even post pictures from my phone/tablet on it and I have a bunch of other sites run on wordpress too so it’s familiar tech which generally works pretty well. It has active bot protection and in the whole time it’s been up and running we’ve only had a couple of spam registrations and (so far) not a single spam post, which seems like a decent start.

It also lets us tag and search and whatnot and kinda just does what this one was always supposed to. I just need to figure out how to export from here to the new format. more wiring…just with numbers

bit more progress today. mostly stuff to prepare for being able to start it.

I definitely now have all the little hose clamps and whatever I need to assemble the fuel system in a way which should handle pressure which means we’re almost done on that.

It’s also now got a set of 4 matching wheels on too on good yokis. I do kinda like the idea of the mud+snow tyres from the audi on there tho I’d have to jack it up a bit due to the size of them (plus adapters and whatever..so prob stick with the 4 on there..).

I also put a bit of oil down the spark plug holes and in the filler hole, turned the motor by hand to check everything was in good shape there and circulate a bit of oil. I thought it was all seized up but then realised it was just in gear. Once released it turned over very smoothly and seemed to make compression, so hopefully I can now go ahead and muck around with wires, and if by some miracle I get it to start then i know I’m hopefully not scoring pistons or whatever.

so basically next stop we’re back to wires I think.

I thought about it and screw the alarm, it’s coming out completely. I liked the remote central locking but it’s not gonna stand between me and starting this thing.

    so…wires

lots of wires. watch this space

is that something which might need “a little work” to fit to a RHD syncro?

oh right, then no this forum doesn’t have that. and tbh i’m not convinced all the emails get through anyway due to the mail sending setup (not easy to change). The new site send mail through a provider with all sorts of bells and whistles to make sure emails get to where they need to get to.
