The Final drive differential crown wheel/pinion gearing on your AYR gearbox is 71/18 which gives a ratio of 3.9444 to 1
which will give 2744 rpm at 100 kph or 36kph per 1000 revs

Your 5th gear ratio is 34/45 which = 0.7555
which is the same as the 02A AYN 2wd gearbox

The AYN gearbox has 70/19 which is 3.684 to 1 –
which will give 2560 rpm at 100kph or 39 kph per 1000 revs

I looked in the shed & all the 5th gear sets I have are the same ratio as yours, you really need to change the diff ratio.

I also know of a 2.4D Syncro that did the same thing, necessitating a new motor.

I don’t recognise it, but that doesn’t mean it is not some one on here who owns it.

No its not a PB GTI engine, it has a PB GTI head fitted (bigger inlet valves) & also a Weber Carb it should be making just over 100 bhp,

It actually belongs to Eddy Young, member EDDY on here,
He has done a lot of work to keep the car in top condition.
