I just emailed the VW Dealer again over this part!

Dont put oil in the green plughole it is not the gearbox filler & leads directly to the clutch!
the gearbox & transfer box fillers ars both arrowed in the photo, the early gearboxes are filled through the speedo cable hole

its part number is 020 301 129D – you will also need part number 020 301 132 – they should cost about a fiver at the VW Dealers

btw – Part number 02A 301 115A is for an 02C (cablechange) gearbox & will not fit the rod change box.

Physically there is nothing to stop you replacing the VC with a solid coupling, but it is not a good idea as it is the only “escape valve” in the system, as it prevents propshaft wind up.

without the VC unit in your 4WD system, it will not last long, & by that I mean days rather than weeks, months or years!

With the transfer box it is far more salable, as it is usually the transfer box that breaks!

    Q) Does the transfer box fit any other gearboxes?

    A) No only the Golf 2 Syncro & Country

    Q) Why is that glove box £50?

    A) Cos he is a greedy person! Actually its the badge thats valuable not the box, until last night this was on ebay with a buy it now for 20 pounds, after I emailed him over the badge he put the price up to 50 pounds, as I said a greedy person,
I will be absolutely gobsmacked if he manages to sell it at that ridiculous price.

There is a rear diff on ebay.co.uk atm

    link here

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/mk2-golf-syncro-rallye-rear-diff-/320683833469

Please notice it has the now unobtainable centre mounting bracket fitted!

He is also selling a Syncro rod change gearbox minus the transfer box, no way is he going to get anything like the asking price for it

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/vw-syncro-rallye-gear-box-/320683833465

his best item is this, but he does not realise what he has!

btw, That is a rod change gearbox & will not fit a Rallye (or a Passat Syncro) & to be honest without the transfer box its really not worth very much.

just out of interest what happened to the transfer box?

Pascal & I also tried to fit a similar set (non coilover) to a Rallye Golf they were also to low at the rear, Most people including suppliers (who should know better) think that golf 1 rear shokkers are a straight swap into a Syncro, but unfortunately for a variety of reasons they are not, a quick search on here will show you why.

    new%20rear%20springs%20and%20shocks%20003.jpg

original syncro rear shok on left, new golf 1 rear shok on right,
note the difference in spring platform hight ,the golf 1 is lower by 1 inch, and this will cause the tyre to foul the lower spring perch as you can see here!

This is with 2wd rear shokkers fitted, & the front jacked up to match

    Specification – Sidewall – Radius – Diameter – Circumference – Revs/km – Difference
    195/50-15 — 98mm — 288mm – 576mm — 1810mm

    553

    0.0%
    195/45-16 — 88mm — 291mm – 582mm — 1828mm

    547

    1.0%
    185/55-15 — 102mm — 292mm – 584mm — 1836mm

    545

    1.5%

The rolling radius difference of 1% to 1.5% is not really worth worrying about, as it would only give a speed of 101 or 101.5 kph at same 2387 revs

Before someone misunderstands me,(not you Dan) all 4 tyres must be the same size front & rear!
