What happens is that the UK Dealer parts monkeys cant be arsed looking a part up for you,
50% of them dont even know where in ETKA to look to find the Golf2 Syncro, and of the rest most of them cant be arsed ordering a special part for you even if you give them the number, especially if its a small part of little value.
The average(sub)standard UK parts monkey also cant seem to understand the difference between “on back order must come from Germany & “no longer available, dropped without replacement”
Another UK Dealer catch is delivery charges on specially ordered parts, these parts are shipped through Volkswagens own delivery service at no cost to the buyer.
If you need new Syncro parts please give me a shout as I can usually beat the UK Dealer price & save you some money & if its backorder item I can most of the time have it delivered to the UK & in your hand inside a week, not the 3 weeks the UK Dealer will tell you, I accept paypal (in euros) & I ship all over the world.
.Chris SModeratorThe mixture screw should be one & a half to one & three quarter turns out, set that then make sure the choke is OFF and put the gas pedal to the floor & hold it there while you turn the motor over on the key, keep turning for 30 seconds or so if its flooded that should clear it and hopefully it will start.
Chris SModeratorNutter has done this conversion and knows exactly what he is talking about.
Chris SModeratorThey are hexagon head bolts M12x1.5×102 and they hold the rear outer swing arm to the wishbone, 2 are on order as of now.
Chris SModeratorIt should start & run with the 276 cam, btw did you put some neat petrol down the inlet an try starting it? it sounds like its your sparks if it smells of petrol that bad, have you taken a spark plug out to see if it is wet with unburnt petrol?
Chris SModeratorWhats the ebay nr?
Chris SModeratorThe Golf 1 shell will need some stiffening to cope with the extra stresses placed on it by the bigger motor & Syncro drive train, there is a thread on fitting a mk 2 front subframe to the mk 1 shell []

Chris SModeratorWhat conversion are you thinking of?
Chris SModeratorThe 1800 8 valver is not an interference engine, so the valves wont hit the pistons what ever you do.
Chris SModeratorDid you get the correct coil? there are 2 different ones and it will run as rough as buggery with the wrong one fitted
Chris SModeratorPut about a teaspoonful of neat petrol down the carb inlet, then try & start it, if it fires & runs for a few seconds then its a fuel problem, if it doesnt run then its a (spark/valves) timing problem.
Chris SModeratorHave you checked the valve timing? if the spark timing is ok then this is the most likely problem, and it can cause spitting back through the carb.
Chris SModeratorNot that much, round about 100 pounds complete with transfer box. btw dannyp lives in Ross on wye
Chris SModeratorYou would probably be better off asking that here http://busgoons.com/
or try this link to an online ETKA http://www.vagcat.com/
btw, you will have to register to use the ETKAChris SModeratorIt sounds like your 5th gear is knackered, this is a common fault on these boxes and is usually caused by a shortage of oil, it is not a Syncro specific fault as it as it affects the 2wd Golfs as well, probably your best bet would be to fit a 2nd hand gearbox, there are enough of them about all over the UK, I can think of at least 3 people with a spare rod change box in their possesion,
Whereabouts are you based?
If you are in the Bristol area you are dead lucky as both diamond hell & dannyp are not too far away from you and both have spare gearboxes and the equipment to fit them for you (if needed) [] -
