The rear wheels should start to drive within one tenth of a second or one quarter of a turn of the fronts spinning.

Yes all of the exterior panels will fit straight on, basically the only panels that are different are the transmission tunnel & the boot floor.

Here is a link to a video of when TC & Danny first got the motor to run, just watch as here they are both watching expectantly untill it fires up!

To be honest there are parts from all over the world built in to this motor, its a tribute to VW for making them all compatable as well as TC & Danny for having the patience to mechanically fit it all together & then contemplate the wiring for the management system, the general consensus over on this side of the channel is that when properly set up it will have nearer to 160 bhp than 150bhp at the flywheel which means about 135/140ish bhp at the wheels. No you cant repair them, you just replace the VC unit completely with another one.

It may be that your VC unit is not transmitting the power properly when under load, they can do this if they start losing fluid.

Not even VW UK know very much about the Golf Syncro, the system is usually very reliable & works for years!
How long have you had the car? & has it only just started doing this?

As the car is still driving (although in 2wd only) about the only mechanical part which could cause these symptoms is the VC unit, it is unlikely that anything else mechanical is broken, as usually when that happens it involves a big bang or 2 and sometimes oil all over the road.

I would suggest first putting the car in gear & jack up 1 of the rear wheels and seing if you can spin it round,(Engine off for safety) secondly then try checking the vacuum system pipes that go from the inlet manifold to the 3 ball reservior under the left front wing then on to the rear diff, my second check would be the electrics which go from the gearbox switch to the rear diff, there is also a relay & fuse in this circuit, so check for blown fuses.

I dont think that there are any 90mm drive flanges available for an 02C box, are there?

Interesting fact about the Haynes Manual, if you look at the model identification picture on the 3rd or 4th page, you will see they used a picture of a Golf Syncro! [:D]

As this originally started out as a Carburettor version syncro there was no motor management wiring, injectors or sensors/senders at all, it all had to be fitted from scratch.

We have fitted a Golf 2 1800 8v GTI Euro management computer with lambda sonde(something the UK market Golf 2 never had), this computer has been rechipped & upgraded (remapped)to allow for the 2 litre(as opposed to 1.8 litre capacity) & larger injectors.

The original 2E injectors start to run out of steam when approaching 150 bhp (which this engine should easily produce) hence the G60 ones which are good for up to about 200 bhp

The motor management system is self learning to a degree and should cope with the fuelling better than the non lambda version.

Because of the management used & the fact that TC wanted to use the 2E throttle butterly block he actually had to remove the std throttle pot meter and fit the earlier wot switches, this mod can easily be reversed.

They usually are advertised as fitting both the Golf & Passat Syncro but as you found out they dont ! mind you the rear ones do fit both Passat & Golf2 though, possibly thats where the confusion arises?
Could you not get the hollow right hand drive shaft cut down & rewelded? for the left hand shaft any Golf2 G60 shaft will fit.

They are 1 inch(25mm)to long, you could do a wide track conversion (total increase 2 ins) though if you fit the Passat lower triangles & steering rack.

They wont fit, you need the very late G2 Syncro shaft or you can blob a weld on to keep the joint onto the end of the shaft.

The running & maintanence costs are about the same as a 2wd Golf of the same age/mileage, the fuel consumption is a couple of percent more with the 4wd though.

If you have a carburettor car? fitting a Weber carb increases both power & economy
As for value, a low mileage one in tip top condition with full mot etc will fetch round about a thousand pounds or so, but UK prices for good cars do appear to be on the increase.
Have a look through the site you will find the answers to most of your questions.
