ModeratorThe missing part(s) of the magnet have probably been smashed by either the gears or any loose parts flying about in the gearbox,
I woudn’t worry about it too much as compared to the other metals in the gearbox magnet metal is relatively weak and it should disintegrate and then stick onto itself (the fixed rest of the magnet)Chris S

please send me an e-mail if you are interestedChris S

My partsman does that automatically for me on all deleted parts, and unfortunately in this case there are none left anywhere
that’s how i got mine. i think i also saw some on ebay the other day, might be worth looking on ebay.de too.
The problem with ebay.de is that about 1/2 the time the seller (inc Company sellers) list parts as suitable for the Syncro when they are not, you need to check very carefully, as if they are wrong then its a long way to return them (at your own expense)

I hope some of you managed to get out in that rare event here in the UK;- SNOW!
I was out late Thursday night driving home from work in 6″ of fresh snow, I’ve been out and about all weekend and haven’t had a single problem.
The Vredestein Quatrac 3 tyres are bloody exellent!
And so is the Golf Syncro [

ModeratorI just phoned the dealers and unfortunately there are non left anywhere within VW, you could try VW classic parts though

ModeratorLater today when I am at the dealers I will check to see if there are any left anywhere.

ModeratorWhile there should be some movement in the rubber mounting, I am afraid that they are getting well past their sell by date and need replacing,
btw it is best to replace them both at the same time as 1 new one will put an increased load on the remaining original one causing early failure, and as the exhaust & heat shielding must be removed before you can remove the propshaft, it does not make any sense to just replace 1
front propshaft bearing is p/n 191 521 349 rear is 191 521 350

ModeratorI was correct, I do have a nearly new American made TRW Passat Syncro rack in my shed (only the track rods are a different length but can be swapped out for the Golf ones, or you can fit Passat front triangles & have a wide track conversion)
I checked using the method as suggested in my last post and it came out at just over 3 turns lock to lock, but as already said that is not on the car, I would think it would be 3 turns lock to lock when fitted.

If you carefully grip the input shaft with locking pliers (Mole grips) then you should be able to count the turns
Do you think I will have problems getting it recon-ed?
Not if you can find someone who knows what a TRW rack is,
as for getting the parts yourself, it is difficult as VW dont have all the seals you needChris S
ModeratorSkyping with you and Pascal now [

ModeratorSorry, I read it wrong.
If you pull the original motor & box out and you will have soo much more space to work in, then a solution to the wiring problem may become evident, if not I have a “passenger side” EDL wiring harness I will swap you for your drivers side one, if you want to pay the postage both ways?

ModeratorIs there a blanked hole on the pass side on the golf you could use?
or could you make one with a hole saw? -
