The switch is for your lights and the lock solenoid in the diff, you can still purchase a new switch from vw heritage classic parts. I have already replaced the switch and I still ain’t got 4wd in reverse. The vacuum is working but the solenoid is not engaging.
AdemaxxParticipant100,000 wt high viscous silicone is what is required. You can purchase it here….

It is possible to open the coupling to refill with fluid.AdemaxxParticipantDo your reverse lights work? I have similar problems with my car.
AdemaxxParticipantOK Chris, job done!

Every now and then a question is asked on the Syncro site about repairing or “topping up” a VC unit.
At this time there is no means of being able to repair a VC unit.
The fluid is not available, nor is the spec of the fluid known, and lastly the amount of fluid in the VC unit is an exact amount. The quantity and type of fluid in the VC unit determines its “locking” characteristics.
If they show any sign of leaking, get a replacement.A quick check on ETKA shows that a VC unit is not a “exchange” item so even VAG do not repair them.
there must be some way of finding out from vag or the manufacturer of specs of the vc unit. somebody, somewhere knows who made the fluid and how much of it goes in the vc.
Just thought I’d let everyone know you CAN buy the viscous fluid to go into the viscous coupling. I have managed to open my VC and refill with 100,000 wt silicone. This is available to buy in 500g tubs (more than enough to fill one coupling) I sourced it from a Company in Germany. They were very helpful and replied to my emails very quickly, Here is the link to the page for the fluid, it cleary states for use in vw syncro systems.
Hope this helps someone else out there!! []
AdemaxxParticipantCheers for that Chris some good info in there, I was going to add to that thread to say where I got the viscous fluid for the coupling from but see the thread is over 2 years old now so maybe a bit pointless.
AdemaxxParticipantThanks for your help on that one Clive, my rear wiper now works. Still no 4wd in reverse.
AdemaxxParticipantAh, I think the 72 is in the wrong place then?
AdemaxxParticipantSo do you know what the relay in no2 is for by any chance? And I do have rear wiper but it doesn’t work, I haven’t looked at it since I had the car.
AdemaxxParticipantThanks Clive I appreciate that!
AdemaxxParticipantCan anyone tell me does everything look normal in my fusebox? I’ve noticed there is a jumper wire joining two pins in the gap between relay 53 and 80, is this supposed to be there or has someone just bridged the two contacts for some reason?
AdemaxxParticipantIf your reverse lights are working it looks like your in the same boat as me mate, let us know what solves it for you, I’ll do the same.
AdemaxxParticipantNo I’ve never heard it clunk since I’ve had it, only recently got my reverse lights working. I’ll look into this when I get chance.
AdemaxxParticipantThanks Chris I thought this was the case, so how do I check this relay? Can I just put power to the contacts on the solenoid to check if that’s working?
AdemaxxParticipantI’m confused now, I thought the reason the switch on the gearbox has so many contacts is for the 4wd in reverse?? It’s supposed to clunk and lock the diff when put in reverse?? Or am I reading things wrong?
