Just a quickie guys..ive been told by 2 sources that you can use mk1 rear suspension on a mk2 rallye/syncro as they are the same length. The only difference being is the spring rate or dampness rate. Is this true? I have a set at the moment which i want to use while im converting my mk2 to 4wd until i can afford a decent setup. Will mk1 rears get me going for the time being?
Yes they will fit, but the spring perch is a touch to low and will rub on the tyre, also they are to underdamped to control the weight difference between the Golf 1 and the Golf2 Syncro rear ends (photo to follow)
Tyre rubs on spring perch

I made some spacer rings so they would clear

as fitted

Cheers for that!! Im planning on running coilovers, so will i still have to make a collar? (not sure how im going to mount it though…
I dont know, it really depends on the diameter of your spring perches
With coilovers you might be able to just get a shorter spring and wind the perch up the thread a bit if it fouls.
Actually if you look at where chris’ tyre rubbed the perch onthe pics above, it was on the edge – coilovers springs, perches etc are normally smaller overall diameter than regular shocks so it may not even be an issue.
I guess it will also depend on the width + offset of your wheels & tyres..
Running BBs RC 5/100 et38 iirc….
