Its a little quiet on here and needs something to get everyone talking, so i thought i would start this lol.
How did we all get into Syncro’s?
I got into mine from about 10 (now nearly 18) when my mum bought one to replace her driver?
Come on everyone tell your story…
my jetta got written off somebody hit the back and i couldnt afford a rallye, heard about syncro’s and luckily one was for sale on ebay even more lucky tornado red, ive only ever driven red cars they rock. my first 4 wheel drive car i wont be driving 2wd cars anymore either so my choice for car is narrow got to be volkswagen, red, 4×4 and old skool. so far so good with the syncro had it about 3 weeks and plan to have it for many years to come,
treated her today
ordered a rallye anti-roll bar today from volkswagen stockport £78.80 total price including 2 new inner and outer rubbers to suit. will be here in 7-10 days no uk stock has to come from germany.
apparntly makes a world of difference to the car ive been told it livens up the back, makes it more playfull and gets rid of the understeer, cant wait to get it on.
hi all,
I always liked golfs – when I was little we used to walk past a rude mk1 gti “rabbit injection” on pirelli p-slots on the way to school and that was also around the time the mk3 gtis came out so they made a big impression on me…
jut before I bought the syncro I was driving a gti and grip was the biggest problem with it (shortly follwoed by the rust and bullet holes). It had been well modified by its previous owners but all my planned modifications boiled down to the same issue… grip…
then I saw an article about carl roberts’ green syncro in golf mag and it dawned on me that there was possibly another solution….bought a syncro not long after and the rest is, as they say, history.
Well unlike everyone else who actually lives in Europe. I was born in the United States. My buddy and I loved MK2 golfs. We experimented with 7 different suspension types in his mk2. We finally decided that we liked the Passat suspension on Bilstein shocks. This gives a stock mk2 about 6″ lift. Once that was accomplished we found the biggest tires we could stuff under the car without cutting giant pieces of the car off. Meanwhile all this was going on it was brought to our attention that mk2 golfs were built as 4wd stock, after spending 3 years researching syncro we decided to make a purchase, and October of last year we officially owned 2 syncro drive trains. Now after having purchased the drive train there was much more to learn, like we didnt have the wiring or the brace that the rear diff bolts up to. We are actually looking for many parts to complete our project. If anyone has any bits lying around frrl free to contact me.
Cheers,
Ben
some years ago now i bought an accident damaged white 1.8 golf for spares as i needed an engine as the engine in my golf cl had just given up in true style, when i came to tear this golf apart i noticed it was 4wd so thought i’ve got to have play with this before takeing it apart. played with it then though i got to get me one of these and did a few months later, that one finaly died int he eraly part of this year and was promptly relapced by one with a straighter shell and less rust
I bought a T25 Syncro pick-up when I was working on a farm. It was bloody useful. When I left the farm I couldn’t sell the T25, so I started doing 4WD trials. I then organised quite a number of Syncro-specific off-road events and did quite a lot of green-laning with various T25 Syncros.
When I needed a car for a new job I thought I’d see what a 4WD Golf was like. However, the Golf Syncros were all about £800, so I got a Jetta Syncro – only £340. This was OK for a while, but then a silver Golf Syncro with no MOT and a blown flexible front brake hose came up just up the road from me, so I picked that up for £155.
Shame I’ve spent probably ten times that on it since……. I wouldn’t be spending it on it if it weren’t such good fun though.
When the other half and I moved in together she decided she wanted a Golf Syncro, so we got another one. The less said about that the better. Then when we had kids we got a a couple of cars, including one that wasn’t 4WD, but none of them drove well enough for me, or the other half. We finally got a Passat 4Motion, which now tows the Golf to race tracks.
I was never a fan of Mk2 Golfs. My brother got a white 8v GTi and it just didn’t look right to me. Was into my Roccos then!! I then found a Mk2 16V and that changed my ideas on Mk2’s!! I then got a mint Jetta 16v and then sold it to my mate (who tried to kill it, but was then saved my another mate who’s lavished lots of time and money on it!!) I was then going to get a stolen recovered G60 Corrado. Me and a mate both took a day off work to see it but I couldn’t get through to the garage. My mate happened to look through an autotrader and found a place in Farnham with a 3 door G60 Syncro?? Never heard of a 3 door car and thought it must be a typo!! Went to look at it and still have it 6 years later!!
I’m not really a fan of Golfs but am into Scirocco’s and a couple of years ago decided I wanted something 4wd. Whilst I was looking for an Audi CQ I came across this Jetta on ebay quite cheap so thought what the hell. So far I’ve spent probably double what I originally paid for the car and its still not quite right, but I’m kind of attached to it now and due to the rarity of it feel obliged to keep it going….. One day it’ll be worth something
i was looking for my first decent mk2 golf in ’98 and decide on a Driver as my money was none too healthy for insurance. Whilst i was looking about at a rather nice tornado red one in Nottingham, i spotted these odd badges on a rather ordinary looking golf in the corner.
Whats a syncro then mate??
4 wheel drive.
Ahhhh- that would be fun : )
and so the seed was planted…. I bought a driver and that was that. Some tool drove into me and 18 months later I had a payout. Apparently my brother had been telling me about a syncro in autotrader for a few weeks, but i only took notice when I knew i had some £ coming. The car had dropped £600 in price and i was on the phone. I told the bloke that I had the cash and id like to see it asap. I was told that someone was coming on the sat, so i went down one eve instread after telling him that I would have it for the asking price as long as there was nothing majorly wrong with it. My brother took it for a test drive and dented one of the alloys, and we went over it with a mag-light and used some ramps to look underneath. I had no ised who GTI Engineering was and bought it soilely on 4wd + 2 litre conversion = definate fun. I did a lot of research and the rest is history
