Rust does my head in, it’s the bane of my syncro’s existence.
In the time my syncro’s been sat on the drive while I was thinking it was rotting away, I actually realised is a real-life test of the various rust-preventions and coatings I’ve tested over the last few years as I’ve welded it up.
This would cover both “Smooth” bodywork, as in laquered panels, as well as “raw” finishes like you’d expect to find inside your sills, but there’s also a potential comparison of rex-oxide vs zinc-rich primer, water-based rust converter vs VOC-based, raw panels (as from panelshop vs primed etc etc.
Surprisingly enough, some of the work I’ve had done professionally has weathered shockingly badly wheareas my own 5-layer process actually seems to be holding up remarkably well.
It’s not an exhaustive test but the conditions have actually been quite constant throughout so it might be possible to learn something from it. I think I also have photos from when I did a lot of the work in question so I should be able to do a few before/after shots too.
If there’s interest I’ll post my findings but if not I’ll just ponder them to myself
When you consider the average age of our cars (specifically us MK 2 owners) I am constantly suprised that our cars keep passing the MOT, APK, TUV, whichever your local test is, and that we actually have 20 ish year old roadworthy cars, its a tribute to the original VW build quality, after all how many vauxhall/opels or Fords etc of the same age do you see on the road?
