damn, thats something to think about..

could you take some photos if this when it shows up? :)

Ok, so I’ve got this heated screen on order, was this a factory fitted option?  If so, does anyone have a wiring diagram and a list of parts.  And assuming it is a factory fitted option, does anyone have a loom, relays and switch for it?

I have a suspicion that I’ll have to cobble something up myself.

And I’ll take a picture of it for you Housey.

A heated front screen was never a factory option on the Golf 2.

Does the screen not come with any diagrams?

    List of possible parts needed.

    or your local scrapyard

You could mount the switch in place of one of the blanking plates & possibly take a live feed from the HRW switch for your HFW?

Strange but I cant find a relay in ETKA that is specifically for the heated rear screen,

but I suppose that if a relay is needed then you could use any generic 4 pin relay to switch the power to the screen,

you just need to make sure that the power cables are heavy enough to carry the current & fit a line fuse in the power side of the circuit (after the relay (if fitted))

I won’t find out what the screen comes with until it arrives, which is not likely to be until after Easter!

As it is not a Factory option I’ll have to do something similar to what you have suggested Chris.

Hopefully when I put the new screen in it might cure the leek that always seems to be in the front footwell after it rains!

Wow, what a cool find. Some time ago there was a group buy on Club GTI for heated windscreens. It’s interesting to know someone is now doing them ‘off the shelf’.

    good find indeed my man!

    It’s arrived.

Appear to be made by RacingScreens, but I can’t find them on the web! Then again I could have misread the sticker and I should have taken a picture of it before I put it back in the box!!!!

    I have some pictures

Have you fitted the screen yet clive??, any problems

    #7288

Not yet! My Range Rover is out of commission having its heads sorted, so I don’t have a spare motor!! As soon as I get the Range Rover back it will be changed straight away. I could have done with it last week as we had some frost on a couple of mornings.

I’ll post on here, with some pics, as soon as it is fitted.

Hi, I’ve got a heated screen in my mk2 20vt conversion. You’ll need 2 live feeds direct from the battery, 2 30amp relays (preferably fused) and some sort of button/switch to activate it. It’s pretty straight forward to wire up.

I wouldn’t recommend running both sides through one relay as they draw quite a lot of current.

PM me if you get stuck.

    Cheers,
    Kav

you can always use the original rear defroster switch :) using that to activate a relay. how many watts are the screen? doubt you need any more then one 30amp relay with a 20amp fuse. you can draw a hell of a lot of juice through this setup :) but, it all depends on the wattage of the screen itself

anyhow, you who have this installed, how does it work? is it worth it?

since i live in norway, this would be great for me :) as we have more winter here then summer

Don’t quote me on this but I think each side draws between 20 and 30 amps so I don’t think you want to be sending too much current through the windscreen otherwise you’ll start melting the thin wires. I think that this is why the wiring is split in two on the windscreen.

The 2 live feeds/relays were recommended to me by the company that supplied the windscreen so that’s good enough for me.

Anyhoo…to answer your question – yes!!! It’s 110% worth it! It makes life sooo much easier in winter, the snow/ice just melts off in a couple of minutes. I’m tempted to get one for the syncro as well.

between 20 to 30 amps? each side? thats between 40 to 60 amps in total. 60amps on 12v will get you at most 720watt. thats a lot for a windscreen :)

wonder if they will ship to norway :)
