Hi All, Sorry to hear your not on the road anymore Chris but great that you can share the knowledge still!
the problem is the diff CSR is bolt in and the ASU push. not realising this when i had the CSR box rebuilt i used the CSR diff. i have had the ASU transfer box rebuilt and modified to use the bolt in drive cups by Martin Emment of Gas’n’Gears (HotGolf) from the GTi forum. as it was cheaper than opening up my rebuilt bos and swapping diffs.
here are some pics.
ASU Transfer box with collar – this makes the length of the shaft correct
length of shaft coming out original ASU TB
length of shaft in original CSR
difference in case ends of ASU and CSR which causes the shaft length issue.Attachments:
SsaundersParticipantOk. Thanks Chris, how do I message from here? Any chance you can send me a pic or 2 of the with oilway TB, particularly the splined drive end as i ‘should’ be able to tell from that. How much are you asking?
Cheers

SsaundersParticipanthi, cant seem to email anyone via their profile? i have emailed info@vwsyncro.co.uk but get a mail delivery error. can a mod have a look please?
sSsaundersParticipantHi, i was under the impression that i could bolt on the TB (pic on left, no oilway original rallye) to a CSR (VR6 syncro with oilway) gearbox, the pic on right is of the CSR transfer box. i was going to bung the oilways from the gearbox and use the original (rallye) TB but the shaft that goes through for the front wheels is 2 long and wont fit snug onto the gearbox. you can see the difference in pics the original has a bit on end where as the CSR one is splined to the end.
Chris i will be interested in a with oilway one if i know it will fit the CSR box.
thanks for looking.

SsaundersParticipantHere is the original rallye TB and the TB from the CSR.

SsaundersParticipantHi, Chris. Thanks again for the quick reply, I have been doing some googling and it looks like they are different?

What do you think?

SteveSsaundersParticipantforgot to add, the only code my guy can find is
ASU 06099?
cheers
steveSsaundersParticipantHi Chris, i have been in contact with the seller and he has suggested this one (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VR6-Syncro-Getriebe-CSR-VW-Passat-Golf-3-erst-125Tkm-/120761287554?hash=item1c1def0382:m:mEBjMBe4YiT-dej_9mEjVfA#shpCntId) if i do buy from there i will use the forum link.
i cant seem to add pics in?. i have not seen it in person yet but hope to do that tomorrow as the gearbox is still unidentified.
SsaundersParticipantOK, quick update. It’s a blown diff that has also cracked the bell housing.
I have posted in wants for either bell housing or complete VR box.
Thanks for the help.
SteveSsaundersParticipantThanks again Chris. So my thinking is identify which rear diff I have and that will determine which transfer box I need. As its a 4 stud conversion I’m leaning towards the 4 cylinder and I did speak to someone who had a couple £175 each. I will hold off until I’m 100%.
Cheers
SteveSsaundersParticipantHi Chris, my current hope is that when the conversion was done that they used the housing from a MK3 syncro and kept the 4 cylinder TB and rear diff.
i know i am taking the Mickey now but do you have the codes for the 4 cylinder TB and rear diff for comparison?
if your ever down Essex way look me up as i owe you a couple of beers!
cheers
steveSsaundersParticipantHi Chris, thanks for this detail! I assumed that as it was a syncro mk2 donor and would need the mk2 transfer box but I see now that it must have been the mk3 gearbox as the VR bell housing is different. How would that effect the rear diff? Are there any codes I need to look for?
Where would I source one? The 4 cylinder ones are difficult enough!
I may just have to look at haldex instead, I have been looking at the phirm for the conversion but that’s booking for next year!
Thanks again.

Ok, thanks Chris. Sounds cheaper than a new diff? Would I not still have front drive though? What sort of money for a trans box and is there anyway to strengthen the gears, shot preening or something? i just need it to last a year till the haldex conversion and would hate to turn the boost down! []
Thanks

steveSsaundersParticipantHi, thanks for the reply so I can use a 02A VR6 diff ring gear?
