    *strokes chin*.

I hate to differ here, Chris, but -it might be a large particle of crap in the tank, that’s partially blocking the outlet, causing the fuel starvation. If that’s the case, you might try removing the outlet pipe from the tank and emptying it – I’ll bet there’s some ****e in there after 20ish years, even if it IS a plastic tank. PLEASE be very careful when removing the hose – you may find the plastic tank is a little brittle after all those years.

I don’t know what sort of a breather network of pipes (if any) ther is on the tank, either – if there is one this could be the cause. Fit a flexicap with a hole drilled in it and see if you get the same issues – it would suggest that the tank is suffering a vacuum situation, stopping the fuel being pulled out.

Keep going, you’ll get it sorted eventually. At least it isn’t a bloody earthing problem – I hate them!

it won’t do any harm you may gaina few ps. bumpy cams are a no no in syncros ( rhd ones with stock exhaust anyway ) anything over 270 starts been a problem. biggest gain is to be had from webber and gti head with a shaved hedgehog. set up right that give’s upto 125 ponies on the 2wd GTI exhaust system or about 110 with a syncro exhaust

It sounds like maybe you shouldn’t focus on speed, but enjoyment factor of your car, in which case removing weight will do it a lot of favours, but if you’re looking for handling, too then it would be a good ideal to swap out the rear ARB for a Rallye one – this will sort out the handling and allow you to start enjoying the Syncro, rather than worrying about straight line speed, which means so much less, especially when cutting past a napping Impreza WRX on a roundabout – these cars are (IMO) about handling, not outright speed.

Sorry, yes – lift pump on front of engine – I was thinking of anything with an injection motor, which needs an electric lift pump on the tank, as well as the electric pressure pump under the floor – neither of which are present in a std Golf Syncro.

The pump on the front of the engine might need replacing, but I’ve not heard of one failing before – maybe Chris will be able to shed some light….

What’s your overall objectives and budget for the car?

For me my Golf Syncro isn’t about 0-60, it’s all about the bends – you’ve got to enjoy your corners and a Syncro can see to that.

There’s no fuel pump – the carb has to draw the fuel through from the tank – maybe the diaphram in the carb is shot, or alternatively, maybe there’s some junk in the tank pick up.

You could take off the fuel feed and blow it back using an air line.

Also I’ve come across a situation where someone’s fitted an additional in-line fuel filter – there should be only one, or that might screw up the fuel feed.

Whereabouts in the UK are you?

What air filter are you using on the Weber?

If you’re not using the proper OE spec airbox and trunking etc then you might be getting carb icing – this would be especially prevalent if you’ve fitted a K&N-type filter. Icing could cause the symptons you’ve outlined above, even in the toasty warm weather we’ve been experiencing over the past few months.

Chris, how long has that specification been rattling around, being developed in your head?

It sounds like several years from that post…..

What about an 8V set-up without forced induction (an anathama to people like DannyP, I know [:p]) – it’s probably the way my Golf Syncro will go (next year).

Holmes, you’ll be needing a cable-change ‘box to handle that power.

Add another £500 for that and all of the hardware around it.
