The reason the arse sags so badly is that the springs aren’t progressive, so all the coils sag at the same rate. I fitted Golf3 VR6 Syncro springs on mine – I think the rears went straight on with new oil dampers (all that I could find) and I think I (eventually) cut about 3 coils off the front and replaced the front dampers with Bilstein gas units. While you’re doing all that you really need to replace the rear ARB with a Rallye one – it sorts the handling out massively by removing the pig-understeer.

Yeah, that’ll be a failed top mount. I just replaced mine with the direct part – it’s going to be much better than the ones you’re replacing, simply because it’s doing it’s job properly.

How much have you spent on your transmission?

You got to ask yourself is it worth junking hard to find bits just so you can run a totally inappropriate wheel combination?

Unlike Porsches and other rear-drive cars your car is front-drive biased. This means you should run the wider tyres on the front, as that’s where you need more grip, not the rear. Thing is, if you did that style-wise (which has to be the only reason you’re so hung up on these wheels) you’d look like a moron. The sound advice delivered on here still stands – stick with same size wheels and tyres front to back. Sitting at the side of a road with broken drivetrain parts will make you look like more of a moron than running wider front wheels, in my opinion, anyway.

No, you shouldn’t leave things disconnected. If you’ve ever driven a Syncro you’ll be familiar with the occasional *BANG* as the freewheel releases drive to the back axle when you put it into reverse. this is necessary to release the tension in the drivetrain or you are going to start breaking things.

would leave the gearbox well allone, the overall ratios are simalar to a gti box but if you go changing the FD ratio your going to end up with some very high ratios through the rest of the box whitch will seriously dent performance

Something is very very broken. with compression reading like that your engine can be considered dead.

I doubt it’s the cam but you may as well remove it, and do a leak down test and expect to find it leaks down faster than the Titanic.

The most likely cause is your valve grinding or incorrect assembly of the valve gear, ditch head get & a new one
