I might be interested in coming but I’ve got a mk3 syncro
MikesMemberI ended up taking it to the garage, they plugged in the computer found the fault and re set the engine management system. all done in less than 5 mins. bargin at £30!!!
I wish I could get my hands on the conector and download the software for my computer somewhere.
It’s also the last time I put jump leads on the car. next time I’ll charge up the old one or buy a new battery.MikesMemberI think you’ll find the shocks from a Scirocco are the same length at the syncro, might be cheaper than getting them from a vw dealer.
MikesMemberYay fixed!!!!
Finally no clicking, although not tested 4×4 in reverse as can’t find any where suitable at the moment.
But I’m confident!!
The last part which I took apart (probably should of been the first) was the little switch on the gearbox linkage,
So it seems that it was only a connection all cleaned up and now working.
Well I’ve learnt a little more about things syncro wise so that’s a plus.
Thanks Chris for your advise. I’ll be travelling over to berlin sometime in July probably so might take you up on your offer and pop past!MikesMemberSpoke to my brother, his carb is designed to fit under the existing plastic air box, so I guess your not interested in that.
If you decide you are then he said he paid £120 for it and is open to sensible offers.MikesMemberThanks, I’ll get myself to a printer tomorrow, it helps to see it on paper! I fitted some gti seats in, which will help me stay in my seat on corners!
One thing I forgot to ask you Chris was did VW ever fit an arm rest to any mk3 golf? I really need an arm rest in the middle, now I’m driving on the left, my right arm hates not resting on the window!MikesMemberI’ve fitted a webber carb on my 91 syncro, it’s got a Crome cover with a filter in it. I think you’ll be looking for something like it.
When driving it makes a nice loud raw, really making me want to drive hard! Love it best thing I ever did to it. (appart from raising it!)
I got it off a scrap golf, so not sure where you can get one, although I think my brother might have one for sale, as he accidently won two on eBay! When his crappy pienberg carb stopped working.
I’ll ask him and post update.MikesMemberOk, well that’s good news I spose as it isn’t that!
I checked all the vacumn pipes and they don’t appear to be damaged. They go into a large plastic thing just behind the axle, impossible to get to really.
Maybe the next thing to do is drop the rear suspension down to check it all out???
Don’t really fancy it till it warms up for summmer.
The 4×4 is working going forwards so at least I can still have fun in the snow!!
I’ll change all the oil next.
It looks exactly the same as the Mk2 golf rear drive, maybe I could get one of those to fit
or find a damaged Mk3 syncro in a scrappy in Europe somewhere and get the rear axle…… still big money then don’t fancy thatMikesMemberfound a picture of the axle on here,

MikesMemberright, been under the car finally!, and all the pipe work looks in fine condition,
The only thing that looks bust is a little unit by the axle (has 4 pipes going into it) with a spring attached to it, and it looks like one of the locating pins is missing, however without one to compare with is a little tricky.
the spring feels loose and not very springy! is this the bit that engages the 4×4 for reverse?MikesMemberjust phoned up GSF, a break pedal switch is on £5.25 so I’ll be trying that first! fingers crossed.
MikesMemberright, did a search this morning online and the results so far are:-
fault with the break light switch on the pedal??? why??? it’s the glow plug light!!
fault with the relay for the glow plugs. this sounds more likely
I’ve found a couple of people who have had this problem and VW just replaced those 2 parts. (then charged a fortune I guess)
So I’m going to order them and fit them first I think before I consider a garage.MikesMemberI’ll be checking it out this weekend. thanks for the pic that’ll help.
MikesMemberjust read in the forum
Rear Differential
This operates as a conventional differential with one exception it allows drive in one direction and freewheels in the other. This can be reversed by a mechanism that is controlled by an electrical solenoid and vacuum actuator to enable 4WD when reverse gear is selected.
(The operation of this device gives the characteristic “Clunk” occasionally heard when the car is moved in reverse)Could it be my solenoid and vacuum actulator that’s broken?

It could be the rear diff though, however these are in plentiful supply for 4 cylinder engine and there will be no difficulty getting hold of another one if it does happen to fail,
However the VR6 rear diff is notoriously difficult to get hold of and if your car is a 6 potter you should get it checked asap
I can pick up a v6 diff and vc for £100 from a scrappy I know who has an estate with a blown engine.
what does a 6 potter mean?
my car is a 66kw turbo diesel.
Who would know how to check it? my local VW dealer hasn’t any real idea I spoke to the head mechanic who hasn’t seen any!! So I’m not really willing to waste £50 an hr for them to scratch their heads. -
