Its good to have an excellent source of information (and parts) back on the site.

    Welcome back.

    Dave,

You mention spacers being required with 16V brakes.  Why are they required?  Does the 16V have spacers or is it because I’m running 205s?

I’ve been contemplating what I want to do with it and have decided to take it up to GTi tune, although may consider fitting a cross-flow head to it as well!

The idea of a Jetta Country has always appealed to me and would have gone that way, but have not come across a Jetta Syncro of suitable condition yet.  I’d also have to get a cheap Country from Germany, but don’t think that that would be too much problem!  I also thought about converting the Jetta into an estate version as well, making a ‘mini’ Range Rover!  However, this will have to wait until next year sometime when I build the double garage on the house!!

I now have a registration number and will pop down to the local motor factors tomorrow (Saturday) and get some plates made up.

So the rest of the weekend I’ll be buzzing around East Sussex enjoying myself!

    I’ll have a look.

I’ve been trolling through the documentation and the original German log book lists the tyres as 195/60R15 and 175/70R14!

It then has a load of figures under the heading ‘Bemerkungen’ which includes 205/60R15 and 7JJx15. I think these were added by the dealer when first purchased.

However it may be a while before I can decipher the relevant bits. I’ll have to get my brother to translate them when I go over again.

Just had it back from the garage with an MoT. I shall pop into the Licensing office tomorrow, but understand that it may take a few days to get a number back!

In the meantime I might give it a good polish over the week end (might be the last it gets for a while). And take some photos.

Hopefully I shall get my first chance to drive it properly by the middle of next week.

All I need now is a MoT failure 16V GTi 5dr in black to rob the parts from.

Drove all the way to Southern Germany over the weekend and trailered it back. It was on ebay a couple of weeks ago, but I was only able to pick it up Saturday.

    Bigger brakes
    Rallye front lights/grill

in reply to: Insurance Check #4900

Sorry Chris, I seem to have missed your reply for some unknown reason.

The question is a bit academic now, but I was trying to find out if a car I was intending to purchase from Germany had been involved in an insurance claim. Obviously over here we can do a credit/insurance check on the interweb on the registration number, but in Germany the plates do not always transfer with the car.

Don’t worry too much about it, but if anyone knows for future reference it might help someone later!

    Chris,

You say you are running M+S tyres on your second set. What size are they and what make?

The Country I have bought has a set of winter tyres, but these are snow tyres. I would like to fit M+S or ATs to them. Does anyone have any suggestions for suitable sizes and make?

I’m not intending it to be used for track days. It is intended to replace my current Golf2 GL 4+E, which I use everyday, and add some of the versatility (and luxuries) of my Range Rover LSE.

However, I will use it at some of the shows and to play a bit in the mud! I’ve got a quote from HIC and notice that they have ‘additions’ for this, but think my mileage is a bit too high (25000mls / yr).

I’ve just talked to my insurance company (NFU) and they have declined to quote on a LHD Golf Country Chrom Edition[:(] Although a couple of years ago I asked them to insure an Overfinch 570Ti and they knew exactly what I was talking about and it cost the same as a standard Range Rover[:)]

Anyway I digress, I shall try Brentacre but does anyone have any other suggestions?

Found Ed38. But unable to find the for sale bits. Do you need to be a member for this?

in reply to: Upgrade to Country! #4861

Where’s that? Do you have a link or an address?

in reply to: Upgrade to Country! #4856

Well, I almost became a fully fledged member yesterday[:0]

I went all the way to Koln in Germany (mit trailer) to buy a Golf Country. However it turned out that it wasn’t quite as described and there were a few things wrong with it, despite my brother (who lives in Germany and speaks the lingo) asking all the right questions. So I offered him what I thought it was worth, but he was adamant that he was not going to budge. So I turned around and went back home[:(]

Oh well, back to the drawing board[:(!]

    Nearly there,

I’m very tempted, but have a Golf Country lined up in Germany. Am due to go over in a few weeks time. I think it is a bit nearer then York!!!!! Trouble it is the longer I leave it, the more expensive it is becoming due to the changes in exchange rates.
