Is it me or is the site running slow?
not all the time though!
seems slow when posting messages!!
mike
Dont worry, its not you, the site is sometimes running slow enough to time itself out. []
i wondered about this and thought it was my computer.
Even as I type this, LD50 is down at the petshop buying a new hamster, when he returns he has promised to oil the wheel as well.
This is what was originally happening when someone logged on.

This is the upgrade.

You may like to look here as well as it now appears a wobbly wheel could have something to do with the lack of site speed!

Seriously though, we are shortly switching to a new format/Database platform, which should hopefully fix the present slow running situation.
yeah chris is right – there’s something causing it and I think it’s to do with the database system we’re using. Nothing wrong with it as such but there’s several other sites on the server using a similar one and I think the disk access is too much so it needs a kick every now and then till I’ve figured out what’s causing the lockup.
We are actually working on some stuff which would sort that quite convincingly
Oh my god…. I never thought…I’ve killed off hampsters or at least made them redundant, me and my big mouth..I never ment to hurt anyone/thing when I said it was a bit slow, I never thought my action would have such repercussions, how can I live with the damage I’ve done!!!!
Im so sorry please forgive me, please, please!!!
BTW when do you think it will be fixed?
mike
well I found you can feed the hamsters a mix of normal food mixed with about 5% H2O2 and they go right off their nut…
Rabbit type food??
hamster food…
btw re site speed.. I’m working on something which would convert this forums to a more up to date framework which would allow all sorts of clever stuff like uploading pics, member photo galleries and stuff all under one login. It’s actually not a million miles away from what TC used to go on about with joomla, it’s a similar framework, but this is based on code run on our own server which we have full control over, as well a control over development of new features etc, but without having to write every damn last bit of code myself which takes forever.
It’ll mean me migrating the forum from one type to another and then to another again and mean changing database platform, scripting language as well as operating system, so it’s no small task at all, but i’ve built a prototype community site on the new platform which is of a similar interest group to vwsyncro and it’s working brilliantly (www.onlinedrifting.com/?trk=vwsyncro).
We already did some initial tests of the syncro site under the new platform (drupal) when i first started messing with it and it looked ok, but I’ve since spent 6 months or so mucking about with it on a few prototype sites and see how it runs in practice and I reckon I’ve formulated a plan for this site.
I’ve even done a test migration (the “and to another framework again” bit) and I know that works, it’s the first bit and the preparation which is tricky.
the new platform would also allow better spam filtering, a full private messaging system, tagging, twitter updates, fivestar rankings like on youtube, you name it…
Have a look at the onlinedrifting site – see what you think. It’s built as a files type repository for folks on a drifting forum I’m on and is not massively different from what we’d need to add here, just with the forums integrated.
more as I have it….
I agree, my input was only in fun, and it also showed my lack of computer know how as well!
Don’t forget that next May (2011) I am 60 years old, oh sh*t thats a bugger, I think I must have been born to early!
yeah I figured I thought it might be a good time to broach the updates thing though
