I could see your test photos of the motorbikes a moment ago but they have disappeared
does this piccy show ‘Golf Grills”
Nice! I’ll update when I get home/in the morning.
Many thanks for the behind the scenes work to fix the issue.
Have you all been waiting with bated breath? Cant concentrate at work due to wondering what ive been up to?..
Lets rewind a week…….
Had an hour or two in the shed this morning after the Japanese GP, new rubber disc fitted, bolts were knackered but I had some spare. Interesting to see the VW part number on it seeing as it’s febi.
I then moved on to fitting the BMW bearings to the prop, now while they physically fitted when flange was fixed to the end it basically clamped the bearing and stopped it moving. Hhmm, comparing and measuring followed with head scratching.. eventually noticed that on the old bearing part of the rubber had been sliced off! (See pics for where I mean)This, once done to the new ones fixed the issue and it all fits good! So, for people thinking of fitting these bearings, it’s much easier to slice the rubber off before you fit the bearing.. I also got the Rallye heat shield fitted, fits well but certainly makes doing the bolts up harder!
Tank straps!
Get those narsty rusty bolts out, a spray of wax, refit with nice shiny stuff.
Job done ?
I’ll hold on to the old straps for a couple days, does anyone want them? Rusty but intact, could be good for making copies without removing yours?.
The plan was to leave the rear sections of exhaust, they werent pretty, but they were nearly new, but they were modified, not actual syncro/country ones… can you see whats going through my mind here?.. yes, with me keeping on staring at it everytime i was under the van, i had no option but to replace… 😀
Got the IMASAF cat back set up.
finally got round to replacing the leaky seal on the rear diff, this was kinda done in celebration of finally finding a 25mm VC!! And within a mile of my house!! Bonus. 😀
So, err… i seem to be amassing rear diffs.. im up to 4! Basically this started with the vc on my car being the wrong 22mm version, so the hunt was on for a 25mm version. Tricky because they just dont seem to be about. Bought one blind on ebay that was over 300 miles away, just thought id at least make my money back if its the wrong one. Thanks to very nice friends, it is slowly making its way down to me, but i have found out it has a 22mm vc 🙁
Had a quick look on ebay and found a guy within a mile of my house selling a rear diff/vc off a Rallye! Bingo! Popped over to pick it up and found he had 2! Picked one and took it home, all night its playing on mind.. should i buy the other.. that would then give me two 25mm vc set ups, a decent spare to have… and lo and behold it turned up on my doorstep this morning! I now have two 22mm and two 25mm set ups!
Guess ill have to move on the two 22mm set ups, not much point in having them, well the vc’s at least.
Nipped out in between rain showers and got the Rallye handbrake cables on. definitely due a change anyway..
A question, is there a source for the plastic handbrake clips that the cable clips into just after leaving the guide tubes?
Also the clip that secures the cable to the underneath of the trailing arm, does anyone have a pic or a part number? im not sure what clip im meant to be uses there.
Not too much has been going on lately, my local sandblasters machine has been broke for a while.. But, should be picking it all up tomorrow. Then i can paint/get new bearings/hubs pressed in
Took the opportunity to have a sleep out in my other syncro, just me and the boy 😀
I have got the old master cylinder out and the front to rear brake pipes, all ready for the new cylinder to arrive..
looking forward to the clean work now, and getting it all back together before the weather get too cold!
happy man today! picked up a load of parts from the blasters, didnt want it to all flash rust so hung it up in my own spray booth AKA back garden…. And gave it a couple coats of electrox zinc paint, have to leave it for 96 hours before topcaotingnthen i can start putting stuff back on! 😀
A few things have been happening, new master cylinder fitted in nicely. All of the rear axle painted now, even put the 1st bush in, exciting times!
Glad i chose satin paint, looks better than gloss in my opinion. Also started to sort out the splash guard for the rear discs, uses 4motion ones that im cutting up
And just a quick pic of the car to prove it still exists!?
Great progress, thanks for posting info about the e30 prop carrier bearing. I need to replace both the front and back ones on my Jetta syncro. Did someone weld custom mounts onto your chassis to attach the different bearing bracket to?
Thanks, yes the brackets were welded before my ownership. Not the best welding, but it works..
I actually don’t want to fit these now, they’re just looking too pretty?
The trailing arm bushes come with a fat and thin end, nothing to tell you what is meant to be inner or outer so ive just fitted them to be the outermost for each bush. Anyone know any different?
Picking up the 6 screws for the brake splashplate tomorrow and hopefully straight to the machine shop!
Plus a pic of the backplates cut up and painted
