ModeratorDont worry it will snow again this winter especially at your latitude, and believe me when the car is ready it will put an enormous smile on your face, it is so worth it as with proper tyres on they are awesome in snow! [:p]

Participantanyone know what kind of alloy the tranny is made of?
looks to me like there have been a axle that have run loose once and cracked the housing of the tranny
it looks to have been repaired with chemical metal (expoxy based). soft to the touch..
hopefully its weldable

Participanti don’t feel like changing the cases
too much work. and i’m not very experienced with transmissions
i’ve had almost a dozen golfs, have rebuild engines, but no trannys yet

ModeratorRe-weld or re-epoxy it then, make sure the epoxy putty is well mixed and the metal surface is totally grease free and you should have no problems, If you need any help shout!

Participantthats why i’m asking what alloy the housing is made of. its not plain aluminum?
October 8, 2009 at 10:47 pm #6419Chris S
ModeratorI would suggest that it is possibly a magnesium alloy somewhat similar to an “ally” wheel, but I dont really know! [

Participantstarted on the brakes yesterday
going from 239mm to 280mm. not too much in numbers, but those discs are way bigger in person :pshould be an easy swap too
October 11, 2009 at 11:59 am #6420Chris S
ModeratorYou may need to swap the lower ball joint/swivels for the Passat ones, they are supposed to be the same from 1989 on but you never know what has been changed or modified in the 20 years or so since your car left Wolfsburg.
or if you are going wide track you can swap the complete triangles over. [

Participantno widetrack

and i’ve reused the lower balljoint from the passat, clips right in. no problems at all
