well. got the car fired up here the other day, no ill sounds other then a loud ticking from my lifters (brand new ina lifters, not even driven 1 mile yet)
so. i guess this is because of a constriceted oilway. since this happend the last time i was out driving the car (june/july 2010). tought it was the lifters, so replaced them. but since the new ones are acting the same way, i can only be two things
insifficent oil pressure (going to hook up my oil pres gauge tomorrow)
constricted oilways. a bit more unsure how to fix this, but some compressed air and some steel wire should do the trick
getting close now
hopefully i’ll do a test drive during the next week
Did you prime the lifters with oil? while it is not really neccessary it helps, if not with new lifters it can take untill the engine gets warm for them to all to quieten down, just leave it ticking over for a while.
lifters was installed summer of 2010. engine has been rotated since then, releasing the oil
and the lifters was pre-primed (INA lifters)
does not stop ticking when engine is hot btw. still ticks
ok, then your oil gallery might be slightly blocked! []
that is my biggest fear. unsure on HOW to fix this, but i’ll probably find a way during today
You probably need some of this

whatever you do please do not put your motor on one of these

well. its not the oilpump, thats for sure
hooked my gauge up to the head. have (on idle) about 4.7bar pressure on cold engine. 1.5ish on warm
on 2000rpm i’ve got about 2.5bar when warm
taking the valvecover off tomorrow. just need to get some headache tablets first, i usually get a severe headache when doing these things (oil/gasoline fumes)
Just out of interest what grade of oil are you using?
you need to run 15/40 in these engines anything less is too thin and will cause problems.
10w40 is what i’m running, which is what is reccomended for the G60
ok
remember our cold weather too heavy oil is not good when its below -20c outside
falling behind on updates here.
anyhow. changed oil and filter again (to more heavy weight) and ticking stopped. so thats sorted
have taken next week off of work. (last years vacation days which is did not use)
so its going to be a busy week
monday: wheel alinment
tuesday: to the importers for a “pre” check and get documentation on the rebuild
wednestad: to the “DMV” to get the car through inspection. and hopefully i can get my license plates which is preordered and ready for me
fingers crossed
Fingers crossed for you here as well!
btw, I had a similar problem with the oil as well (in as much as the oil pressure was not registering on the scale & when warm the oil pressure warning buzzer was sounding on tickover, this happened when the official VW garage put a too light grade into the engine
After my complaining, they blatantly said “it was the correct grade to use” mind you they could not (or would not) say what grade of oil they had put in my motor,
Mind you they also said “that most of their mechanics (part fitters)were younger than my(1989)car”
Pascal sorted it out for me last summer with an oil & filter change (with the correct weight oil) when we called at his garage on the way from my house (almost past his) on a trip to England []
If it’s of any use, I’m using 5W40 Mobil here in Finland with no bother at all – 10W40 gave a difficult start-up on cold mornings.
well. i thought i was using more heavy grade oil then i actually did (i don’t remember numbers well)
but, i was running 5w40. and now i’m on 10w40. solved all my prblems
