hi guys, ive heard that you can get quick racks for vw mk2 golfs, ( a quick rack being a steering rack that instead of being say 4.5 turns lock to lock, it is only 2.5 turns) iam looking at maybe getting one of these but was wondering if anyone had any experience with driving a car fitted with this, and how difficult it makes everyday driving. i was hoping to ditch the powersteering in favour of this to save weight, space and reduce the need for more fluids.any ideas
The non power steering has a lower ratio than the power rack (less turns lock to lock with power), there are 2.7 turn & 3 turn racks available in LHD I dont know about RHD though.
With decent 195 or 205 section tyres fitted the non power steering is extremely heavy at low (parking) speeds & unless your surname is schwartzenegger you will soon get fed up with it.
My 87′ gti has no power steering and 195x45x15s and it’s a bitch to park – not too bad for me but my missus can hardly drive it (has its upsides though).
