I seem to be doing a bit of motorway driving in my syncro and was wondering about changing the gearbox for a 4+e to keep the revs down and boost the economy .
Do you think this be a good idea or would it impact performance otherwise? and suggestions for a compatible donor box appreciated.

    Thx.

On the 020 box you already have the highest 0.75 to 1 (diesel ratio) 5th gear, the problem with this box is the final drive which is a very low ratio at 4.66 to 1
You need to put a higher (numerically lower) final drive ratio in, have a look here http://www.scirocco.org/gears/ you have the 4S ratios apart from the final drive

would leave the gearbox well allone, the overall ratios are simalar to a gti box but if you go changing the FD ratio your going to end up with some very high ratios through the rest of the box whitch will seriously dent performance

could put some bigger wheels on – your speedo will read off but it’ll adjust the final drive ratio somewhat.

Cheers for the response guys … I’ve already got 15″ wheels on and don’t really fancy any bigger.
I’ll just have to live with it as is.
