MemberHi.i am from GREECE and nobody knows about syncros and how it works this system here.I want to ask what the point of rear diff vacuum system, can i disconect this? Also can i change the final drive in gearbox (pinion) or this is wrong for syncros.I have a golf mk2 20vt.I want your help and knowledge, thank you.

ParticipantThe vacuum system disconnects the rear drive under certain circumstances. It prevents transmission wind-up and is an important part of the system.
If you change the front diff final ratio you will need to change the rear diff also. They must be the same or you will trash the transmission very quickly.
If you want to use the 20VT engine you must use a cable-change (G60) gearbox, rather than the rod change as the power of the 20VT motor will pull a rod change box apart very quickly.

MemberThanks DIAMOND i am realy need your help,i used a cable gearbox AWR and AHB transfer box and we have change also its final ratio,we are continuously testing because nobody here knows syncros,i wonder if there is a formula for all these parts

ModeratorYou could try contacting Spyros in Athens who posted this http://www.vwsyncro.co.uk/data/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=535 Or have a look at his website http://www.extreme-tuners.com/
btw you really dont want to be disconnecting the vacuum to the rear diff as the freewheel diff lock wont function properly any more [
]As for changing the differential, if by that you mean the normal 2wd type crown wheel & pinion differential and not the Syncro specific front and rear ones?
Then it can be changed to alter the overall gear ratios by swapping the crown wheel and pinion shaft (btw these must be swapped as a pair)February 28, 2007 at 2:55 pm #2442GOLF1398
MemberYes Chris i mean that i change the crown wheel and pinion.I try to find the best formula to get all the hp to the ground without any problems,i have already buy a peloquin rear diff and i plan to get the front one.I want your suggestions about the best and stronger gearbox.transfer box and the rear system.Until now i have break two gearboxes and a rear diff.I suppose from what are you saying that i must find the way to connect the vacuum system,i have read all the old posts about but it seems to me very difficult.Unfortunately Spyros have not finish his project yet…

ModeratorHaldex is the strongest system but it is a nightmare to fit into a Golf 2 and then it is almost impossible to get it working properly, it is also a megabucks and mega commitment project

MemberAs far as I was aware, the G60 (cable-shift) gearbox and rallye rear diff are about as strong a setup as you’ll get without going haldex…even switching to cable-shifted box is enough hassle though!

While all the above is true, I think some members on here have fitted the O2C box with stronger(Audi?)gears, and in one case even fitted an O2J 6 speed Syncro box,
btw the early ASU code Rallye boxes had a cast iron transfer casing which is stronger than the later aluminium type, the best members to ask are probably are nutter4x4 and rallye ronanFebruary 28, 2007 at 10:12 pm #2448GOLF1398
MemberDoes anyone have any codes or can help me find this parts? The AUDI gears i think that are from the A2 turbo,02J syncro box, what is this?[?]Do you mean 02M?Can i use 6speed VW gearbox?Somewhere in the forum i think that i read to avoid the ASU,is this true?
Yes, I did mean O2M [

MemberIf you mean the 02M 4MOTION,can i use it to my syncro?

ModeratorOnly if you go Haldex or are prepared to change the transfer box gear ratios, either way its a costly exercise, if I remember correctly Marcel at Dutchdub did this conversion a couple of years ago,
here are some threads relating to this conversionhttp://www.vwsyncro.co.uk/data/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=980

MemberFrom your replies…
1)Its a mistake to change the ratio of transfer box (20/21) to another ratio.2)The best gearbox i can use is the G60,can you give me code to look for?
3)If i change the crown wheel and pinion is this influence negative the AWD system?
Thank you Chris and all the guys for your help and i hope to complete my car soon so i will tell you the result.March 2, 2007 at 6:14 pm #2457no such user
Participantcrown wheel and pinion can be changed, the angle drive is driven off the diff so it won’t mess anything up
