I can easily believe you guys! love this car allready[:D], now waiting on some money to improve it a bit, I have my eye on a 16v cylhead from the kr engine, i can just bolt this on the GU small block, can’t I? And would i need the kr ecu?[:o)]

Not exactly, it is not that simple [:(]

it might also worth checking my “KR into syncro” thread here:

    http://www.vwsyncro.co.uk/data/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2162

I think that’s actually the simplest way of getting a 16v into a rhd syncro. It’s taken me a bit longer because I got distracted with (holes in) bodywork and stuff along the way. The actual engine bit of the KR-into-syncro has been pretty straightforward so far and KR motors are cheap, tough and reasonably plentiful.

Dannyp and DiamondHell have also done conversions but using “9a” blocks I think. More powerful end result but possibly a bit more involved.

I would not go the mix-n-match route again myself…that ended up as an engine with lots of random odd bits on it, not un-fixable I imagine but it was a bit less “oem” than I was after. Check the “PGKR” folder in my photos for pics of how that went. It ran but I wouldn’t want to travel across europe in it whereas the KR-into-syncro looks like it came that way from the factory, with only the downpipe and transfer-box-bolt-bracket as custom parts, all the rest is oem.

what would make sense for an 18yr old on a budget would be to get it running *well* and reliable on the GU and possibly wang on a 32/34 DTML weber carb and enjoy it for a while. Perhaps a bit of creative fettling with the exhaust etc too.

For the tradeoff of performance vs ballache the 32/34 is the easiest gain you’re ever going to see on the syncro. If I’m wrong someone please say so.

He is LHD so has the (far) better twin downpipe as standard.

as i said, the plans are changed to swapping the engine instead of adapting to 16v, so the GU will stay in nd maybe get a little more power like you said untill the other one is done and can go in…

the swap can only happen in 2011 as the syncro then turns oldtimer [:D], by then i’ll have been slowly buying the needed stuff to boost it [;)]

it’s indeed lhd, what would be best, KR or 9A, because chris showed a 9A for sale for a bloody low price!

thanks for all helping me like this you guys [:D]

KR is missing a bolt hole.

9A has bolt holes rod change gearbox transfer case fouls block tho. tho a tuned 9A/KR will eat a rod change box. cabel change boxes clear the block nicely.

ABF is optimal. electronic managment rather than K jet, is missing a bolt hole for the transfer case bracket. but it’s not the uppper one but the lower one in it’s place there is a large rib running across the block, you can drill through this and modify teh bracket to bolt up, i used two bolts and reused an existing hole that was for an extra support bracket for the abf’s gearbox

175 bhp engine for not meany more £ :)

no, our glorious leader put a stop to that when labour came to power in ’97. which is why only pre ’73 cars are tax-free as they were 25 years old in ’97.. we should be able to have tax-free A reg cars this year.
