Hi all, I finally have my mk3 syncro transplanted.

Of course I find puddles of fluid from the viscous, has anyone ran into this? Has anyone serviced the viscous since it’s “not serviceable.”

Due to the age of these posts some of the links posted in them no longer work. [:(]

From what I’ve read the vanagon units are rebuildable as they have a big snap ring. I read you have to machine the case off with a lathe for our cars? I’ll have to check the fill plugs to be sure it’s not that

The hardest part doing the job is removal of the wire that holds the end cap on, it’s fed through the slot in the side of housing. When reassembling I gripped the wire with mole grips and tapped with hammer and it went back in quite easy.

I had saw that. I guess I just don’t understand that concept how a wire holds it on. I will have to look into that. Are you guys able to get your hands on seals over there for it?

Its like a big heavy circlip.

I will be following that link and cutting the lid to use a big circlip. I will update once it’s finished and hopefully functioning.

There is already a big circlip (ring) holding it all together, you need to remove it, there is no need to cut anything!

I have a hard time believing that it will be reusable once out and not completely rusted. I will take a look at it when I remove it and see if I can reuse it.

Chris, you were right, my machinist showed me how it was done. It was a very cool design.

If anyone needs help or an idea how it all works definitely ask. I can’t say for sure it helped but my fluid was very dirty and it was leaking.
