Ok so basically we’ve been having issues with the old setup for a while now which meant new members weren’t getting their notifications which sorta gridlocked the whole process.

I’ve been working on this setup for a while and whilst it’s not perfect it should pretty much work and has become the lesser of two evils… so here we are.

It’s meant I could re-organise the forums a bit too into slightly more logical groupings, hopefully that’s an improvement.

As far as I know this system will let you attach files/images directly so no more mucking about with uploading elsewhere. I’ve even been able to post pics directly from my phone (when using chrome as browser) so that’s potentially quite a handy upgrade.

I’d consider this system on probation for now and I’ll run both in parallel for a bit, but all being well the old forum will be retired very soon. So please post new threads here not there.

Thanks and apologies for the randomness…

hmm. don’t think i like this forumsoftware.

it does not seem that there is any PM solution here?

there isn’t a PM solution yet but it’s next on the list of things to add and I’m sure there’s a way to add it..I just wanted to make sure the basic forum bit worked properly before adding more features and potentially making things more complicated.

There was not really a choice re upgrading..the old system wasn’t secure and it also wasn’t allowing new members to join or sending emails out reliably, but also wasn’t really compatible with modern email sending systems so the forum was literally dying.

Something had to be done and this platform is what I use for most of my websites so I’m quite familiar with working on it and it also allows uploading pics directly etc and there was a path to migrate from the one to the other without losing all the posts (which was the other option if we’d started over)…

Even if there isn’t an out-of-the-box PM plugin which works right, I can write one, so chill, it’ll happen 🙂

No wonder the forums look like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIIuR-HjFho&list=PLV5j_JYCATqPy7Gd3jEzNetbNBiOSsUu5)
It has just taken me 15 minutes to work out how to post as an answer to a topic, let alone start a new topic,

No wonder people are staying away in droves, can we please go back to the old site? it was so much user friendly!
I think if we took an online poll most active members would agree?

I have had more than a few long term committed (10 years & longer) site members contacting me saying that they were not going to bother any longer if the site stayed like this, & to be honest I quite agree,

We have to do something or call it a day & go off line & lose all the info that used to be avalilable on the worlds best (& only Golf dedicated Syncro site)

I feel this new set up as we have now is not sustainable in either the short or long term, I have been asked more than a few times “How can I access the original archives” (where there is nearly 15 years of hard earned info) & to be honest I don’t know the answer,

On a personal note, as some of you already know I have reached retirement age, & I am stepping back from syncro to persue other interests, this however does not mean that I no longer have an interest in Syncro, ergo this post!

The old site had got to the point that it did not work and was also hideously insecure. The email notifications weren’t going out (for reasons I couldn’t fathom despite best efforts) so new members couldn’t sign up and existing members didn’t get notifications…or only some did.

The forum was basically already dead, it just hadn’t realised it yet.

There was NO activity on the old forums towards the end…so in comparison we’re doing pretty well here with *some* activity.

Anyone who fancies migrating the old forums to a new/different platform so that everyone can moan about how terrible that one is instead is welcome to do so. Please form an orderly queue.

The old forum (read only mode) is here: http://vwsyncro.co.uk/data/forums/

p.s. There is also a search button at the top right…all the old archives were migrated across to the new platform so all the posts should be there.

it’s worth noting at this point that you were actually able to post, and I got the email notification saying so..something seemingly simple which already didn’t work anymore on the old forums despite best efforts.

    * also im replying to this from my phone. where the text scales perfectly for the screen size, and it even lets me upload pictures.

I have just been shown where the old forums are http://vwsyncro.co.uk/data/forums/

I dont know why, but I had the impression that we had lost all the earlier info with the change over to the new set up, but thankfully not.

For the rest well I suppose that its just progress, and as you say its a far more more secure set up.

I suppose its like having to replace a favourite worn out piece of clothing, or getting a puppy when your dog dies, its never quite the same, but you get used to it eventually.

As for migrating the forums I am afraid you lost me at migrating or possibly even before!

Is it possible to have the hit/country counter from the old site on the new site?

btw I see there is also a link to the old forums on the home page was that there before or did I just miss it?

Sorry if I upset or offended you, but not having been on site for a while I was shocked that there were no new posts in over 2 weeks

After your post I added a link to the old forums. Keeping all the old posts was my top priority when migrating the system…i’d never want to ditch them all and start over. It does actually explain all this, cunningly hidden on the front page of this part of the site.

re no posts for 2 weeks? I don’t know where you’re getting that info but there were new posts from just the other day (golf country, chrome wheels, very nice too!)..I know it’s not super busy but it’s ticking along, old members are gradually retrieving their logins and new members are joining. The old forum really did have nothing going on, for all the reasons already discussed.

Either way, no worries and glad we’re all sorted now 🙂 (i think)

Hiya! It’s Trev16v here. I didn’t get an email when I attempted to reset my existing password, so I’ve registered with this new account.

    Hope everyone is well.
