Well I was intending to keep it relatively original – I don’t really need speed as I’ve got a motorbike for that… Relatively speaking, all cars are slow! :D

I think you may be right… I was debating a full rebuild of the engine (either the current one or a second hand one) as well as transmission… anyone got that lying around? :)

    Is that gearbox rebuild territory?:/

Oh, and FYI it’s one of these – a bit pricey, but should last a while…

Of course, now that I’ve sorted all the oil issues, I have a coolant leak somewhere… *sigh* :/

Thought I’d post a pic of what I eventually did – link here.

Thanks for the suggestion! I did some tests with only half of the air box on, and it’s definitely only oil vapour condensing within the air box. I did note that the section of the air box that sits on the carb isn’t quite the right part – it’s not got a hole where it should bolt onto the carb – so I’m going to try to find the right one and put it on.

I think I’ll probably also fit a catch can – seems like a neat solution (especially if you use one with proper filters in) so I’ll be trawling the web for a few parts this weekend [:)]

OK, I took the rocker cover off and replaced the gasket. Whilst I was there I had a look at the splash guard, and it’s fine. There’s also a filter type thing that seems to be pressed into the rocker cover – that was a bit crudded up but not too bad. Anyway, as a result I’m still looking for a solution to this – maybe I could stuff the space above the filter in the rocker cover with something to stop the oil spitting up?

So it looks like the 117 / 127 are the correct jets then – god knows where that other guy got his numbers!

Also found this whilst I was digging around, some useful info in it: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v328/JohnRamsay/Carb%20pictures/

Yeah nothing from the crankcase… There’s a black plastic splashguard so I can’t see the cam with the oil cap off. I’ve got a spare (new) rocker cover gasket that I was going to fit anyway so I can have a look under the rocker cover when I take it off.

Chris – do you have the part numbers for the oil seal? Are they still available? Thanks :)

Just seen this thread – I’ve got a set of original 15″ corrado / g60 steel wheels on the way to me, as well as a set of 4 vredestein snowtrac 3 tyres – bring on the snow! :D

So… I changed the oil and filter, but I’m still getting a knocking / slapping at lower revs, even when the engine is warm. As I said in the OP, as is (relatively) normal the tappets tick when cold. Once it warms up it sounds smooth at higher (1000+) revs, but at 800 / 900 (idle, really) you can hear a knocking from the bottom end. A friend of a friend (an MOT mechanic) was over and suggested I get it looked at, as it’s “usually a sign of bad things to come”.

I’d like to sort it myself – I did the clutch in my previous syncro, so I’ve removed an engine before, but in this case I’m not quite sure what to look for – should I just take the sump off and look for bearing wear or something like that? I can’t find anything in the haynes that is at all helpful. If there is bearing wear, is it fixable with the engine in the car? I have a garage, but not that much space to work…

All help appreciated, as usual… :)
