have just ordered some 1990 passat wishbones, and 1990 passat steering arms from gsf, will this do the job?
alexisbladesMemberhow soon do you think you could get them here chris? also how much are you looking for.
so far i’ve only been able to find mk3 golfs in the scrapyards, and it is apparently a bad idea to mix passat shafts with golf wishbones. maybe some difference in axle position? anyway i’m going to need passat wishbones, but i can get these off the shelf at gsf. going to be building the engine this weekend, fitting it next week along with the gearbox conversion. driving to helsinki on the 7th so it’s going to be tight!alexisbladesMemberideal! even easier.
alexisbladesMemberi have the no oilway box but i’m using the transfer box i’m afraid. located near stratford upon avon.
alexisbladesMemberyes, that makes sense. so i’ll take the grinder to it then. if i cock it all up i can still get the genuine mount from vw albeit at £40. thanks for the help.
alexisbladesMemberthanks chris. i have a rallye front mount bracket, i’ll check it on vagcat to make sure it’s the same thing.
when you say saw one of the lugs off, is this where the rear engine mount bolts to the back of the block?
do i saw one of those four lugs off?
will it still be strong enough?alexisbladesMemberyes, looking at vw prices always gives me sympathy pains in my wallet.
alexisbladesMemberif only i had a bigger shed…
alexisbladesMembersadly too true. the parts man down at the local vw in stratford on the other hand, couldn’t have been more helpful. sometimes these guys really want to see a great old car kept on the roads. shame so many people just want old cars scrapped so we can all drive around in modern boxes.
i’ve been looking on clubgti and the consensus there is that mk3 golf 4 stud will be fine, as the lower wishbone balljoints will fit the post ’87 hub carriers with no probs, and is wide track. mk3 passat (86 to 92 i think) will also do.
i can get the wishbones no trouble, but does anyone know where i can get the track rods? most suppliers only seem to do the track rod ends..alexisbladesMembersorry that should read carpartsdirect. based in derby. not impressed. have just had to make a five hour drive to return them.
alexisbladesMemberfound a pair of rallye driveshafts, remanufactured, for £160 from carpartsonline. they turned up yesterday, but for a 2wd with 90mm flange! annoyed. will just go out and wide track it then.
alexisbladesMemberwith me it was the bonnet stay come off it’s plastic catch and bashing against the alternator.
alexisbladesMemberi should clarify to anyone who’s interested, i also have a non-shared oilway box for sale, offers. located in warwickshire.
alexisbladesMembercheers eric. i was looking at yours on ebay but at the time thought mine was fine so i didn’t bid. i think i’m now going to use the shared oilway one, blocking the oilways with core plugs, as it has a longer 5th gear fitted for motorway driving. selling the non shared oilway one on to help pay for it. is yours particularly good? i think you said it may have had a rebuild. one thing i am desperate for is rallye driveshafts, i’ve just been let down. i’m emigrating to finland in three weeks and was hoping to do it all before i go (new engine in, cable change conversion etc), and the shafts are what is holding me up..
alexisbladesMemberta. i have found some core plugs on ebay but he wants too much money. might just degrease it and whack some silicone in.
