does this mean that a skoda angle drive could be used to replace a worn transfer box from a rallye? will it have the same ratios?
alexisbladesMemberi have one good syncro box with transfer box, one with a suspected cracked clutch release fork with transfer box, and a pair of front driveshafts. take the lot away for £50 as it’s cluttering up my mum’s drive. i’ll chuck in a rear diff as well just to get rid.. 07809 148639 give me a ring if you’re interested cheers, olly
alexisbladesMemberi also have a couple of syncro boxes, props and a diff. located near stratford on avon if that’s closer to you.
alexisbladesMembererk.. haven’t personally had the actual donut off and i remember it looks like that so all should be well. didn’t use loctite, didn’t read this in time, but the last time i bolted it up before this was two years ago and i only used a 10mm spanner with another spanner on the end then! was lucky it seems. have torqued them up with brand new torque wrench to 60nm, all the lugs engaged etc. should be ok, and i’m usually a very paranoid mechanic.
took the car out for 300 mile drive today, new engine’s loosening up nicely, wide track conversion doesn’t rub, cable change gearbox a bit notchy but that’s cos it’s got the wrong shift cable bracket on i think. have ordered a side by side cable bracket that should make the world of difference.
thanks to everyone who’s given me advice, it would have been a great deal harder without it!alexisbladesMemberjust as well i asked i’d only done them to 45nm. better tweek them up a bit. cheers for that.
alexisbladesMemberright this is a biatch of a job. no pics yet as i’ve been too greasy to hold a camera. suffice it to say that changing the steering rods is not pleasant on a pas rack. wishbones bolt up a treat, though access to the subframe bolts when using a passat wishbone is difficult cos the holes in the wishbone are in the wrong place to get a socket through. golf 3 ones have the holes in the right place i believe. i’ll try and get some pics up later on.
alexisbladesMemberthere’s not really anything to put the middle of the puller on. danny you’re probably right but i don’t want to have to take it off again really. anyway it’s all academic as i don’t think i’m going to get the driveshafts sorted in time. i’ve only got a week left to get the engine in let alone do the cable change conversion. probably going to sell it all on before i go and put it down to experience..
alexisbladesMemberthe right hand one came off just fine, as the splines are a little worn. the propshaft flage came off with a little tug. i have yet to tackle the left hand one. apparently i can wind some long m8 bolts in through the flange to push it off the box. tahnks for all the help!
alexisbladesMemberif you keep your existing head then no. you can just bolt the agg bottom end in and whack the head back on, or take the opportunity to fit a recon head at the same time. the agg block has a sensor wheel built into the crank which is handy if you’re planning on an efi conversion at some point in the future..

i’m in the middle of doing this at the moment, along with a new engine. the biggest ballache is finding the right driveshafts i think. try ebay.de there are loads of bits on there..
budget on about £200-300 for a gearbox with transfer box, £100 for a cable clutch setup if you’re not going hydraulic, £300 for a clutch and flywheel, £100 for the driveshafts, £150 for passat or golf suspension parts if you have to use passat or golf 3 driveshafts, and £50 for a cable gearshifter. so about a grand, but a lot of that i’ve bought new. best bet is to find a rallye breaking (unlikely very soon). take your time getting the bits together cheap and you should be able to half that figure.alexisbladesMemberi’m fitting a mk3 2 litre at the moment, agg engine code has the holes ready tapped. there is a thread on here which lists a lot of the engines which have the holes.
is your syncro k-jetronic, carbs or efi?alexisbladesMembermy early 8v ’87 ev engine had the lugs, just had to drill and tap one of the holes..
alexisbladesMemberhowever, if you have a really solid rod change box, for the sake of a few gaskets and seals, i’d give it a go.. it would be simpler probably.
alexisbladesMemberi was planning on doing this, but i never got the chance to try it out as i’m now going cable change and fitting a rallye gearbox. it looks like it would work, as i believe the internals are the same, apart from the differential. just the bellhousing casting that’s different. but then, the argument was that for the trouble of doing that, you could upgrade to a cable change rallye gearbox, which is stronger. check out german ebay for loads of the bits you would need..
alexisbladesMembersure, would be glad to. i’ll be doing it this weekend so i’ll take plenty of snaps as i go along. thanks for the help chris.
