I have to agree with Diamond Hell.
My own practice is to avoid sites with a mandatory sign-up fee. I may be missing out on a great site, but the site may also be missing out on a potentially great member! [:D] That said, i’m willing to make a reasonable donation towards this site’s survival.

A voluntary donation would be the best place to start. A sticky would serve as a reminder to members that we do need funding to survive. We can always make changes as our financial needs evolve.

Regarding discounts from suppliers, we need to target suppliers that can serve the “Majority” of our members. Since a small percentage of our members are “long distance” users like me, they may not be able to benefit from the discounts, but most of them already realise and accept that limitation. I have actually found that some hard to find syncro parts can be purchased from UK suppliers and shipped to me in Canada for a total cost lower than what can be found through my local suppliers.

US site: Immediate start at 750kb/sec speed which stabilized at 863kb/sec for the rest of the download.

UK site: Immediate start at a slow 74kb/sec speed, but quickly climbed & stabilized at 489kb/sec for the rest of the download.

As a follow up on my download speeds. I’m seeing a consistent speed similar to my initial test. Variations at different times of the day are insignificant. I suppose that being across the pond may affect speed somewhat, but I’ve seen european sites give me good performance in the past, so distance hasn’t always meant poor performance.

download speed for the zip file at 6:12pm London Time on Saturday: Started with 650kb/sec and finished with 860kb/sec

I’ll try in another 4-6hrs to see how it does.

From my location site speed varies greatly depending on time of day.
3:00pm London Time = 15.25 seconds to load this page.
5:00am London Time = 1-2 seconds to load this page.

The test site loads in less than a second at any time of the day, so it is much faster.

I would expect some slowdown during heavy traffic no matter what server/host we use.

With regards to download tests, just tell me where to go and what to do and I’ll be glad to help.

Perhaps a rule stating that members with less than 10 posts or less than 3 months membership are required to pay a 1 time advertising fee of XX to post items for sale.

Another thought I’ve been pondering is asking for a 1 pound annual membership fee from all members. New members could have a 1 month free access to check us out, but be required to pay up if they wish to remain active. We could offer incentives such as 50% off the next years membership if the member submits info such as a technical article, Photo documentation of a custom build, or funniest occurance that is deamed to be of interest to other members. We could have an annual prize of membership for life for the best article contributed within the year, all of which could be decided by the membership through a vote.

The negative side to all of this is more time required to manage the site, and the risk of loosing some members who don’t feel the site is worth a 1 pound fee.

    Chris,
I thought my connection was fast at an average of 8000-9000kb/s! What connection are you using that can give 13000kb/s? My upload speed is in the same range as yours and I’m quite satisfied.

I see about the same percentage of spammer applications in my Yahoo Group for the Passat G60 Syncro. Rather than loose one interested syncro owner, I carefully evaluate and individually approve each new member as well as moderate their posts for a period of 3-6 months. A time consuming task for me, but other options may affect membership in a negative manner.

You can tell what rear bearing size your car has by looking at the arm. Check the part number. (marked on shock mounting bracket)

    191 505 xxx = 68mm bearing
    357 505 xxx = 72mm bearing
    1H0 505 xxx = 72mm bearing (Mk3 Golf only)

193 505 xxx = ??mm Bearing (Country only) uncertain what size was used

Examine these photos for more details:

I can state that the normal boot will fit, but it won’t last long due to the heat. I tried twice and it resulted in each boot lasting less than 6 months. The second attempt involved better heat shielding, but it still didn’t stop the heat from destroying the rubber. What happens is the rubber dries out and cracks, letting all the grease out. Some grease gets on the exhaust system, potentially causing a fire.

The correct boot is made of a better quality rubber that resists high heat. The rubber section is surrounded by metal, further protecting it.

It also helps to clean out the head of the bolt with a small pick before trying to loosen them. Stripped CV bolts are mostly caused by a bit that does not engage the bolt completely due to dirt in the bottom of the hole. You might also try using a hammer and punch on the bolt before trying to loosen them. This helps with stubborn bolts.

As Chris said, locking pliers are the only method for removal of stripped bolts other than cutting the head off with a grinder.

never mind! I just noticed that the archives are accessible from either of the forums index pages.

I guess I’m the less saavy computer guy [:I]

I have noticed that some pages load a bit faster, but it all depends on the time I try to access the site. Since I’m 6hrs off of UK time, I frequently am able to fly through because I am accessing the site during off hours. If I try accessing the site during your peak hours, the site is much slower.

I was only able to access the archives from the“All Forums” page.

Any way to make the Archives accessible from the other pages?
Minor detail, but it may confuse those that are less computer saavy.

    Great Job Chris!

Let us know the final alignment results once your rear beam is installed.

When I’m finished my installation, I’ll try to provide some photos as well.
