I’m in the process of trying to apply a fresh layer of underseal to my Golf G60 Syncro. I have already removed small areas of bad underseal and fully treated any surface rust areas using POR15 products. I have then made a great effort to clean and de-grease all existing intact factory underseal, though of course it’s terribly difficult to make it spotless.
What I have tried to do is apply a fresh coat of Upol Gravitex stonechip over the whole underbody area. I did this to the rear end of the car last weekend, and on inspecting it yesterday, I was absolutely gutted to find that in many areas it has not adhered at all well and just flakes away very easily. It cracks and dries too hard, and is not very rubbery either. Therefore I now realise that this stuff is only suitable for a nice, cleanly prepared area.
What I really want is a grey or white coloured underseal that’s similar to the VW stuff, and also can tolerate areas that are already a bit oily.
I want it to be rubbery, and white or grey, just like original VW underseal. I don’t want to use Waxoyl stuff that remains tacky and messy.
I think I’m going to take the plunge and buy some cans of VW’s original D003500 sealer which will be stupidly expensive probably, but does anyone have any other suggestions?
I did! It was very expensive though, and I have not used it yet.
I did test a little sample though. Compared with the cheap Gravitex, it is a lot better. It withstands a lot more flexing than Gravitex does. It dries and stays extremely tough and rubbery, just as the original underseal does.
