Basically I have a standard (ish) Mk2 Golf Syncro with a 1.8 GU engine in it. What I want to do is get rid of that and put a G60 lump in it.
What I am not too sure of is what I will need, other than the enigne and wiring.
Will the standard gearbox be man enough for a G60 or do I need to upgrade my drivetrain to parts off a Rallye?
I have had a search through the forums and cant really find much about converting to a G60, but please point me in the right direction if there is a thread on here.
Any help would be much appriciated!! Thanks []
For reliability in nothing else you should fit a complete G60 Syncro gearbox & transfer box, this also has the advantage of having a 228mm clutch instead of the 210mm one,so you will need a suitable clutch & flywheel, you will also need the correct Rallye/Golf2 G60 Syncro front driveshafts, the clutch can be either cable or hydraulically operated that is up to you,
you will need a Rallye/Passat cablechange gear lever mech & cables, & the front & rear engine mounting consoles
Please note that the Passat 35i G60 driveshafts are 25mm or so too long to fit as standard, and if used they must be fitted together with a Passat steering rack, this will increase the front track by 50mm (2 inches)
you will also need the propshaft front section & rubber donut from a Rallye, the rest of the drivetrain rearwards will be ok with the power of the G60 motor.
you may also want to upgrade your brakes & suspension to cope with the extra power.
btw, this is not a complete list, its just what I could immmediately think of.
if you use a passat g60 gearbox the transfer case will have 22mm lugs in the drive flange, some GU powerd syncros have 22mm lugs on there propshafts and they will go straight on to the drive flang of a passat transfer case. i think it soposed to be year dependant so 90 speck should be 22mm pre 90 18mm ( but i have found both 18mm and 22mm lugs on pre and post 90 cars )
you can press the lugs out and make a conversion doughnut and go 18mm-22mm 22mm-25mm and even 18mm-25mm just make sure the lugs prees out square and cleanly without distorting else they won’t locate properly, then they cam out and snap the bolts and make a mess of the prop or drive flange
had it happen on mine and it was a bit of a pain to fix.
as chris said for reliablity you really need a cabel change box. i know some people who have done g60 conversions on rod change and claim to be running 200bhp reliably but that makes me think that they spend all there time polishing and don’t ever actualy drive it. most g60 conversions you see on ebay are rod boxes as well . i broke a pair of rod change boxes with a mildly tuned 2.0 8v couterflow the other issue with rod change is clutch life as the wheels won’t spin much the clutch tends to get more wear and if your motor is makeing good torqe if you set of in a real hurry the wheels won’t spin but the clucth will spin up go cabel change and 228mm clutch it’ll last a lot longer and won’t spin up
Thanks for the info, have a lot better idea of what is required now!

I have some FK coilovers on there now which have made a world of difference to the handling, along with some black diamond disks and pads from off a mk2 16v on the front which helps with the stopping!
Do all the G60 engines have the right bolt holes for mounting the transfer box on? Or is it specific to certain engine codes?
think all of them have the holes never heard of one not haveing them anyway
as far as I know they all have the right holes…I have a g60 lump here which deffo has the right ones.
