See Syncro chew up wheel bearing:

I go to change the wheel bearing, and when I get the axle nut off, the damn hub pulls out of the bearing by hand… and this is what I find:

Notice how much material is MISSING from the hub carrier:

This was after only about 3 weeks of driving on a bad bearing….

Sorry for the crappy pics, all I had was my phone.

Anyone have a spare Left Front hub carrier?

What size brakes do you have on the front?

as the 239mm uses a different caliper mounting set up to the 256mm &

280mm ones, but Either way its a standard 2wd Golf item.

I thought all MKII 8v cars had 239mm, except for GTI and cars w/ ABS…

I wondered if you had fitted more powerful brakes, as its about the first option people seem to fit after weber carbs/chip tuning etc

I am holding off on the brake upgrade, until I have the money to do it proper.

looks to me like the inner race of the bearing is severly worn. and let go the hub.. well. a new bearing, and a new hub, and you are on your way :)

probable reason is too much or too little torque on the centre bolt :) should be 265nm dry. any less. or over. and you’ll ruin your bearing

You’re right about the axle nut torque. When I first got the car, I noticed that the axle nut was loose, so I tightened it to the specified torque, but the damage was already done, so I was just buying myself some time by doing so.

    ***UPDATE***

Guess what? Now the OTHER front wheel bearing is bad…who would have thought? lol.
