The pas pump would have let you know if it was failing, as an engine is loaded at one particular throttel opening as the revs drop the torqe produced increases, it is possible to place quite a large load on an idling engine before it stalls, also pas pump and oil pump problems in general tend to show up as a lack of pressure first, then they start to get noisey and then shake thenslves to bits. if it was seizing you would also hear a lot of belt scream at normal driving rpm
my cars a pain in the backside, my powersteering has slowly started to ocassionaly go stiff. as for the running problem mine seems to have been getting worse as its getting colder even when the car has warmed up. bit of a pain but learning to live with it.
Surely you saved the steering rack & pump from your other recently scrapped Syncro? as both parts are Syncro specific.
What makes the PS rack syncro specific? I have a GTI one on mine and it has been cool so far – the steering is a lot lighter (very light), I put that down to the shiny newness of the (reconditioned) rack…
