Hi I have bought another Syncro to replace the old blue warhorse and have replaced pretty much all the suspension components now ready for the Alps again this winter, but I have a Problem that the Rear wheel bearing has started rumbling
How big a job is this to change ?
Does anyone have a part number for it or a Bearing size ?
Preferably a Eurocarparts or GSF part (Because I get a sensible price from them)
Any hints and tips gratefully recieved
Cheers
Dom
sorry to but in but does anyone know how to remove the rear hub aswell as the bearing and the back plate as i managed to shear the backplate bolts trying.
It goes something like this
1) Remove the driveshaft.
2) Remove hydraulic brake pipe from the wheel cylinder.
3) Remove brake drum.
4) Remove Handbrake cable.
5) Remove ABS sender from inside car under rear seat (if fitted).
6) Remove Spring/shocker unit lower mounting bolt.
7) Remove the 2 bolts holding the swing arm/triangle in place, it will now fall out.
Remove yourself to get a cup of tea, job done. []

i cant believe that vw would make it that difficult to remove a bearing. it must be hard to get all that into a press machine. when i decide to do this i may aswell upgrade the bushes on the wishbone, do you know were to get those urethane bush kits from and price? regards
You can (if you know what you are doing) change the bearing in situ, using a length of 12mm stud bar and some big sockets instead of a press.
hello,
I’m just doing my rear wheel bearings. Am I imagining it or did i read on here, somthing about two different types of rear wheel bearing. I have searched, but could not find it!
I was just going to order front bearings, but it would be less hastle if I knew for sure. It’s hard enough trying to get the right parts off eurocrapparts as it is without ordering the wrong bits.
thanks
Yes, both the 68mm and the 72mm bearings have been fitted at the rear, and it is a bit of a lottery as to which ones were fitted to a particular car, you will have to strip them out to see which you have, sorry I cant be of more help.
You can tell what rear bearing size your car has by looking at the arm. Check the part number. (marked on shock mounting bracket)
191 505 xxx = 68mm bearing
357 505 xxx = 72mm bearing
1H0 505 xxx = 72mm bearing (Mk3 Golf only)
193 505 xxx = ??mm Bearing (Country only) uncertain what size was used

Yeah, thanks alot for your help, again!!
hello, my boss made putting the bearings in very easy, probably somthing alot of you know about or have done before, but I was amazed we put the bearings in the fridge, and gentley heated the wishbone (removed) and the bearing just dropped in square!
ooh good tip chaz
Does anyone know the part number for the 68mm bearing from GSF and the like???
Called VW and got a nasty shock.
I don’t know the gsf number but europart number is 628440270 and it’s about £25(comes with hub nut and circlips) I got a price of vw and it was somthing like £39.
Thanks for your reply.
vwspares do one for 21.90(made by Febi Bilstein), think VW wanted £39 for the 72mm and double for the 68mm.
