Hi – Just getting my Golf Syncro back on the road but the carburettor is working fine until I increase the revs to over 2 thousand and then decelerate when it then cuts out. All vacuum hoses good, electrical connections good, new base plate, relay 61 must be ok as I have another and they both react the same also have a spare 3 point unit which again checks out ok. What happens is the 3 point unit retracts the idle plunger at 2k revs and then when decelerating it does not come forward fast enough to stop the engine cutting out. The only thing that I have changed is the speedometer as the original stopped working and they are now not available so bought one that had the right connections and about the same mileage 75k so was wondering if there is a difference or delay in the signal given to the relay which then releases the vacuum to restore the plunger to the idle position. I see somewhere mentioned a relay 82 but I did not have one of those and it all worked ok some years ago. So a bit stumped – could go to a Weber but prefer the auto choke of the Pierburg. I haven’t checked to see if the 12v is delayed to the change over valve but I can only presume it must be. Have looked up many problems with these units but cannot find this particular one. Do you possibly have a vacuum leak? if so could this cause the symptoms you describe?
The Pierberg carb was notoriously fickle even from new & the Weber is a much better carb,
you will get about 5% more power & 10% more fuel economy with a Weber Carb
Hi Chris Well yes all hoses are good and all nipples tight in housing and if I suck on the two nipples on the three point vacuum unit there is no leak there and if I pull off the hose when the plunger has retracted it snaps out quickly to the extended position – I note that these units, new, now cost about £500 !!! My only conclusion is it might be the Speedo cluster which I changed for one similar as 191 919 035BB was not available anywhere so perhaps the sensor signal on deceleration to the change over valve does not come soon enough to extend the vacuum unit plunger in time. I did want to keep things original but you and others I have spoken to recommend changing to a Weber which is a simple device without all the complications. At least, I see, the Webers are made in Spain and not the dreaded China so will go for that. Just doing a respray so hopefully it will be back on the road shortly. Thanks for your quick reply. Actually I know someone who has a new weber carb to fit your Syncro! His name is Derrik & he is 86 syncro on here.

Just out of interest, how much did it cost?
Hi Chris – I thought I had replied to you but cannot find my answer anyway the cost was £358 from Vwheritage. It needed a little fettling around the accelerator nipple hole but it works very well and the engine seems a bit more responsive. Had to drill three holes in the air intake and use 6cm long bolts to secure it as the original spring clip does not fit. The choke cable was utterly useless (c***) had to put it in a vice to get it to move and then it would not operate smoothly – anyway others are available a British made one very good quality with twist and lock. Now almost ready for a MOT after sorting out the reverse light switch – using a GTI one and extending the wiring with a separate switch for the diff lock as before when reversing on a hard surface it would wind up the transmission and suddenly release with an almighty bang which I don’t think does the mechanism any good. Yes saw the pics of the switch you sent, thank you, and I have silver soldered the flat piece which was very worn but just working out how to get the small ‘rods’ out of the rubber seal and change them over as not all of them are used. So nearly there.
VW golf 2 Choke cable is P/N 161711501C but was dropped in 2011
