My head is on its way out 1.8, gu carb.
It rattles bad !
As i am puting a recon or new head on , i want to have one that will give a bit more power.
I see a lot of talk of putting a pb engine head on it but i dont want to mess around with different manifolds etc ?
I was going to get the gu head reconditioned and maybe get bigger valves put in and have it ported and polished ?
Some veiws on this would be most apriciated.
Thanks
Put a PB head on, the manifold(s) etc bolt straight up all you need to do is to block the injector ports (with pennies)
total extra cost = 4p
if you’re still using the pooberg 2E2 the PB head doesn’t have the coolant channels for operating the warm-up features on the carb. if the carb you’re using doesn’t use these then it’s not an issue. a port and polish combined with a usable fast road cam like a kent gs2h should give you some decent gains no matter which head you use.
He has a Weber fitted
unless you get hold of a head that’s been reconditioned it’ll probably need the valve guides replacing anyway. have a look on the clubgti website, there’s a good guy on there who did my head, recon plus port and polish for not a huge amount of money. he’ll know how workable the GU head is compared to the PB.
Apart from any casting differences the GU has smaller valves for a start.
I am worried about finding a pb head that I know nothing about, as i may have to get one second-hand.
it a toss up between modifying the my gu head or trying to get hold of a recond pb.
If i put bigger valves in the gu head do you think it would be as good as a standard pb head / or i would need a different cam as well valves to be as good as the pb ?
Also would you guys recomend getting the heads ported/polished or are the gains not realy noticible ?

Do you know his name/contact details please?
Yer would be good to have his details, tryed to find him on the forum but no luck ?
Has anyone used THE ENGINE SHOP {theengineshop.info} , they have quoted £370 for a recon gu head +port/polish. ???
and an extra £170 for a fast road cam [|)]
ps, thanks for the replys chaps.
Is a head from a GX motor head any good? I’ve got one sitting here doing nowt. Has been wrapped in clingfilm the last few years.
Hey id50
what was the gx head fitted to ,2.0 GTI ?
Do you think it needs reconditioned and will it bolt up like the gu head ?
Chris. or anyone.
Can you shed some light on the cylinder head codes.
Whats the differece ? 026 103 373f
026 103 373aa
Do you think they are from the pb engine ?
Cheers
Eddy – it was from a 1.8 syncro kjet motor, the first one I took to bits – I think the Engine code was GX – not sure what code the head itself is. There’s photos of it gettign stripped here:
Got a close up of you head thanks, looks like the code is
026 103373g.
Sounds good but i wonder if there is a difference in this engine and the PB that Chris has said is best ?
Sorry for messing about but i want to be sure before i start spending money on stuff that wont be the best option for my block.
Maybe 026 and the 036 heads will work but i wonder if there is actually any difference between the two [?]
The GX head has the same valves as the GU motor, the inlet valve is the the (important) one with the larger size, the cams are also different, but are nothing special, the GX cam is the same as the G60 cam, and can be be replaced with a sharper one.
