Believe it or not, I picked this car up for $350 out of the American run Junkyard at Ramstein Air Base. The previous owner scrapped it when the original Pierburg 2E2 carburetor on it started acting up, and idling at 3,000 RPM…. aside from that, it passed inspection right out of the junkyard… 😮 It only had 159,000km on it when I got it.
It’s an ’86, which meant small doors. Just how I like ’em. It also means that this was one of the 1st MKII Syncros. It’s powered by a 1.8 8v, w/ 90ps, but with a 10:1 compression ratio! 😮 First give away was the sticker on the fuel tank door that says “Premium Unleaded Only” Put a GTI head on this thing and it will cook!
I lost the first picture I took of it at the junkyard in a Hard Drive crash, so I will start as far back as January then:
By then I had already installed a set of Racelands for a Golf III VR6 Syncro (don’t I wish I had THAT as a swap car.) and put some 13″ Ronal R8s on it for the winter, while I was waiting for my new carb to get here.
Syncros are a blast in the snow!
Can I haz snowplow?
Carb is finally here! It’s a Weber 32/34 DMTL.
Old school, w/ manual choke, and a progressive mechanical secondary. The throttle response on this thing is incredible!! Really woke this little 8v up. We’re talking a NOTICABLE power increase over the old carb.
here’s a side by side with the old carb. notice the difference in the port sizes between the 2 carbs, and how much simpler the design is over the crappy, auto-choke carb:
And to top it all off, a nice K&N open element filter. Doesn’t do much for performance over stock, but man, does it make this car sound great!
Well, spring is finally here, so it’s time for summer tires! The Scirocco is down for a (long) while, so I decided to steal the wheels off of it. A virtually perfect set of polished Cups. ET25 all the way around, with 10mm Spacers in the back. After the cups went on, I decided to bring the front down some more, so now it has a wicked rake.
Also added some half-smoked Hellas:
I know it needs to be washed, but it’s pointless when it won’t stop raining for more than 12 hours at a time right now.
Next on the list is to clean up the engine a bit, give her a good polish & wax, and to kiwi those damn bumpers and flairs.
More to come…..
Just wait till you put the GTI head on, it will really wake up then!
btw that is a very tidy looking car. []
Very cool, wish we got them in N.A. How do the racelands ride?

not bad at all. little on the broke side these days, but i’ll manage.
which form did you see me on Vortex? not many people would actually remember me by screen name.
im sure it was vortex as i remember all these pics so i must have read your thread on there. Im pretty sure you posted pics on my syncro thread too. Im hopeless with names and sigs, but i do recognise the pics
I don’t take pics often, but the ones I have I will whore every chance I get.
Had the car on the lift today to change out the coolant hoses, and a leaky thermostat housing, so I figured I might as well test fit the new-to-me 16×7.5 Borbet A’s.
They won’t be staying white, I’m going to try and take them in to be sandblasted this weekend, and will be respraying them flat black….still up in the air as to if I’m going to take it further, I kinda wanna do something different with them.
Sorry for the crappy pic, didn’t realize it came out blurry until I had already taken the wheels back off… :banghead: I will be running 10mm spacers in the back, this is the result….
