A while back I put up a wanted ad, Chris S put me on to a guy on this site who had one. A few weeks later and I’ve bought it and it’s back home. Thanks Kevin, I’m delighted with the car.
Here are some photos of when it arrived:
So I got stuck in straight away. Swapped the standard 16 front discs for pagid grooved discs included in sale.
We then fully rebuilt the rear drums with new brake cylinders.
Then we gave the car a full service.
I took it for a drive. The few tuning bits done to the engine seem to have made a nice difference, it’s suprisingly pokey, I reckon it’s near enough 8v GTi power, however it gets its power high up in the rev range.
It’s brilliant being back in a MK2 again.
I’ll throw up more photos when I wash it.
What a lovely looking car []
Glad to see you are happy with it Conor, and I’m pleased it has a good home.
Keep us posted on the progress.
Kev
wow,nice car
Thanks very much, some updates due shortly.
I am in the process of refurbing the wheels.
The car had a significant list of jobs needed. Here is what I have done since the last update.
The car was not running right, this was traced to a split rubber carb mount and a few split vac pipes, fixing this solved the running issue.
the was a small water leak from the front flange on the head, a new O ring sorted this.
My new syncro handbrake cables arrived, I now have a functioning handbrake.
Standard MK2 headlights are terrible, so I fitted a HID kit that I had lying around from my Quattro.
There were a few areas of bodywork that had to be addressed. A rust hole on the p/s rear door shut was cut out and a patch was welded in, the back bottom corner of the p/s back arch had a rust hole, this was welded in too.
I fitted a colour coded GTi rear spoiler.
The coilovers were wound down another 20mm.
I fitted plastic arch mouldings.
I fitted chrome trim bumpers that I got with the car
I wet vacced the interior and carpet and refitted it.
I also refurbed the wheels in BMW Sepang bronze with a polished lip.
I brought the car on its first ever drive on Sunday, a 220 mile round trip, apart from an occasional squealing alternator belt (Now tightened) it didn’t miss a beat.
I think I have brought the exterior as far as it can go without a full respray, the next update will probably be something interior related!
hi connor seen your jetta syncro i noticed that your car was lowered from standard i have problems with mine i have a disc converison and it lowered on ap coilover and the camber was so bad it would not pass the nct so the question ,what spring have you on your syncro i would be inetrested to know all the best thomas dublin.[]
Hi Thomas. The car is lowered on FK coilovers all around. They came with the car when I bought it.
Your car is running coilovers too so I assume it is on more or less the same set up as mine.
Describe the camber on the back of your car, overly negative, or overly positive? I’ve noticed the back wheels on my car have quite negative camber, but I am unsure if this is due to the coilovers or if someone fitted shims to the back, I haven’t had a very close look truth be told!
Due to the design of the Syncro rear suspension, you will get excessive neggy camber when you lower it to much,
this may help.

That would explain why my rear camber went negative when I lowered it further
Anything new with this?
my syncro got approved here in norway with 3degrees negative camber on the rear..
looked wierd. and was a pain to drive in the snow. rear end was floating around as it pleased
Nothing new for a while I am afraid. I am putting the finishing touches to my ur quattro before I can start this project.
I have the jetta looking very standard at the moment.
I have replaced all the indicators with standard orange lenses and removed the non tinted tail lights for standard rear tails.
I have wound the height back up to a far more subtle drop.
I have put a GTi chin spoiler on it.
I have a blue ultraviolet GTi interior to go in.
I also have a G60 engine for it.
I am on the lookout for a rallye gearbox.
