AndyFParticipantHi Sam, how is the build going? Curious to know what you did with the rear brakes? Did you keep the drums or convert to discs? If so which disc / calliper and carrier did you use? Cheers.

SamSamParticipantHello Andy!
I’m currently being held up with parts – I’ve been waiting about 5 weeks for bits to make their way down from York (MOST frustrating).
Rear brakes I’m using mk3 golf rear calipers/discs/pads, rallye handbrake cables (volkswagen-classic-parts.de) and carriers I sourced from ebay Poland (I’ll attach a picture), they came as pictured but cost the best part of £200 all in if memory serves me.
If you struggle to find a pair it might be worth fabbing adaptors and using the mk2/mk3/corrado setup. This would have been the route I would’ve gone had I known I’d still be waiting for other bits.

SamSamParticipantWhat engine are/will you be running?

AndyFParticipantCheers Sam, Nothing too exciting, got a 2e bottom end from my old gti, recently rebuilt, with digifant setup, on an original TSR head & cam. Not mega quick but smooth. Got a Rallye box, cable link clutch, g60 front brakes. Planning on getting a manifold and downpipe built once the rear end is done. Where are you based? Basically I’m looking to build a syncro gti type thing. Those carriers look mint… if you change your mind?

SamSamParticipantNo worries 🙂
Niiiice.
My old 2E mk2 was loads of fun, it’s not always about big power. Are you running LHD or RHD?
Indeed, cost enough 🙁 Adaptors really wouldn’t be that hard or expensive, it’s certainly worth looking into. If you google image search “vw brake adapters rallye” you’ll find some useful links (I did try and attach the address but for some reason the links won’t post).
I’m Suffolk based at the mo – yourself?

AndyFParticipantCheers i’ll Look into adaptors. Mine is a UK spec golf 4 door, RHD Syncro. I keep meaning to do a build thread… i’l Get round to it eventually. It’s been on going for years, so just getting motivated to finish it now. It’s good to get chat with like minded folk – keeps the motivation high! I’m based near Reading.

ModeratorPlease Andy, do make a build thread,
Compared to it’s heyday it has been to quiet round here for to long, but it is picking up now thanks to you & others. – Chris sSeptember 13, 2018 at 8:42 pm #21999Chris S

SamSamParticipantRear brakes are now together –
Rallye carriers
Mk3 golf calipers and pads
Mk2 golf 1.3 front discsSomething bothering me is the “swept” area on the disc, there’s quite an area which the pad misses. I haven’t had a chance to investigate but it’s on the list…

SamSamParticipantWith regards the the fuelling, I’ve sourced a rallye intank pump but don’t want to run a second under the car because wiring/20+yr old plastic etc. Pictured as an “all in one” mk3/corrado lift pump/reservoir (note the crap in the filter). I’m working on my own version of this to run in the tank, reason being the one shown is physically too big to fit through the opening. More to follow on this as and when…

SamSamParticipantGearbox was looking a bit crusty so started cleaning it up with TFR and a copper brush – it didn’t look like that on ebay.. 🙁
Once it’s clean I’ll spray it black.

SamSamParticipantWiring has been a big ol’ pain in the ass, not so much the sorting but there have been a number of damaged sections. Most of them I would have never have found if I hadn’t stripped the car.
Left and middle are G60 loom, on the right is the Jetta.
Close ups of some damaged sections.

SamSamParticipantMorning y’all!
So a big ‘ol spanner in the works has been (and I still am) waiting for the transfer box to turn up, if I can source another I’ll pursue a refund on the one I’m waiting for, so if anyone has one to mate to a CDG gearbox please hit me up with a price.
Appreciated. -
