Hi all, I’m having issues and could do with some advice and help.
Basically I have a Corrado VR6 turbo that has been converted to a syncro it has a quaife 6 speed kit. I was giving it some beans and lost all drive and it sounded like a bag of nails but I could still select gears, I’m waiting for the box to be pulled and looked at. My first guess is the diff is fubar? If it is I was looking at sticking a quaife lsd in.
If it’s the diff what’s the chance the ring gear is still useable? If not where can I get a ring gear as I believe the VR is different to the 4 cylinder?
Having a quick look I can’t see any holes in the box but who knows, where can I get an empty box from? And what sort of money?
If it makes any difference it’s running 4 stud hubs not VR 5 stud. I’m sorry to ask so many questions as I didn’t do the conversion and am in the dark till my mechanic can pull the box, so I have no codes or anything.
Thanks for looking and any help you can provide.
Cheers
Steve
same ringgear as FWD.
Hi, thanks for the reply so I can use a 02A VR6 diff ring gear?

It is more than likely to be the bevel gears in your transfer box that have shed at least a few teeth. []

Ok, thanks Chris. Sounds cheaper than a new diff? Would I not still have front drive though? What sort of money for a trans box and is there anyway to strengthen the gears, shot preening or something? i just need it to last a year till the haldex conversion and would hate to turn the boost down! []
Thanks
Steve
If it is your transfer box then you need a VR6 Transfer box with 16/21 gear ratios, & not the 4 cylinder one with 20/21 ratios.
If it is the Differential then these are fitted in matched pairs (crown wheel & pinion)
Hi Chris, thanks for this detail! I assumed that as it was a syncro mk2 donor and would need the mk2 transfer box but I see now that it must have been the mk3 gearbox as the VR bell housing is different. How would that effect the rear diff? Are there any codes I need to look for?
Where would I source one? The 4 cylinder ones are difficult enough!
I may just have to look at haldex instead, I have been looking at the phirm for the conversion but that’s booking for next year!
Thanks again.
Steve
The rear diff has to have a suitable (matched ) ratio to the transfer box so it has 21/16 for the VR6 & 20/21 for the 4 cylinder models, however the 4 cylinder transfer box will bolt up directly on to the VR6 Gearbox, & of course then the VR6 transfer box will fit onto the 4 cylinder Gearbox
VR6 Codes are
Gearbox Code VR6 – CSR
Rear Diff Code VR6 – CSS

Hi Chris, my current hope is that when the conversion was done that they used the housing from a MK3 syncro and kept the 4 cylinder TB and rear diff.
i know i am taking the Mickey now but do you have the codes for the 4 cylinder TB and rear diff for comparison?
if your ever down Essex way look me up as i owe you a couple of beers!
cheers
steve
The 4 Cylinder Rear Diff code is
G2 Syncro ARR
G3 Syncro CBX
To the best of my recollection the transfer box does not have the code stamped on it.

Thanks again Chris. So my thinking is identify which rear diff I have and that will determine which transfer box I need. As its a 4 stud conversion I’m leaning towards the 4 cylinder and I did speak to someone who had a couple £175 each. I will hold off until I’m 100%.

OK, quick update. It’s a blown diff that has also cracked the bell housing.
I have posted in wants for either bell housing or complete VR box.
Thanks for the help.
