    Hi everyone!

I’ve been an avid reader of the forum for a while and it’s helped no end! But now I could do with some more help please.

While driving yesterday, I noticed a rattling sound when I pressed down the accelerator pedal and no power. Then lots of engine oil smells, oil pressure light and it cut out. I then opened the bonnet to see oil and coolant everywhere! I’m presuming something very serious has happened within?

So, I now need a new engine.

I live in Portugal and I have a 3 door 1991 golf syncro. Very rare for this neck of the woods. And the selection of engines is very limited. I would be happy to upgrade to a 16v or 20v or 2.0l but Im wanting to know what would be the easiest, simplest swap I could do? Bearing in mind I cannot get the same engine here. I can get my hands on an AGG and an AGU. would these be suitable? Or is there a better option? Is there other bits I would need?

I have a Weber 32 34 now but would also be happy with fuel injection. I have done alot of work on her, but engine stuff is way out of my remit! I will be seeking assistance.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    Shaun

yes it sounds like something has let go in a big way!
so you have a Code GU engine
it would probably be easiest to fit another GU motorcode engine (if you can find one)
anything ese & you will have to be changing the wiring harness to suit the new motor, then splicing it in to the original syncro harness
I will look & see what I can find on line

    Thanks Chris

When you say GU code, would that also mean an AGU code engine would be compatible?

It’s such a struggle in Portugal to find a compatible engine!

An aquatannce has just offered me an ABS code 1.8 from a Passat. Would this fit?

I’m at my wits end and have put it on the market to see if someone else wants it. Still in two minds though.

    I have just thought
I have a G60 motorblock with zero lkilometers since being bored out to 2.0 liters
    can be fitted with either
an reconditioned 8 valve crossflow head & pistons & decent cam about – 125bhp
    or a 2 liter 16v again reconditioned heah & pistons & 16v 2 liter cams about 145

Please let me know if you are interested?
