for years we’ve been using email sending services like sparkpost and mandrill because they always had a free tier which covered our usage, but that’s been getting ever more difficult to maintain, and recently we’ve been on quite a limited quota (500/mo for all the sites on that account) which means sometimes mails don’t go out.
The solution was to build my own mail server and then I can pump as many emails as I like out into the interwibble but mail stuff is not really my area of expertise nor somethign I enjoy diving into when I have to.
However, I’ve just got it working so hopefully that’s a step towards improving things. The new server is looking promising but it’s raison-d’etre was the email sending so till I had that working there was no point moving sites over to it, since I may have to nuke it.
It does seem to be working ok so far though so hopefully now I can start that process which, once this side is moved, should dramatically improve the usability & responsiveness of this site.
Currently the database keeps falling over and I have no idea why. I run another identical server which works fine so it’s not the loadout.. it’s jsut a config somewhere I’m missing but god knows what it is.
I’ve had enough going on just trying to make sure we’re ok recently so there hasn’t exactly been spare time to mess about with servers.
Hopefully this is another step towards untangling the mess everything’s gotten into. 🙂

Hopefully… if you’re reading this we’re across on the new server, whcih has twice the ram so should hopefully not do the hanging thing. we’ll see. The emails seem to be getting through, to me at least. is anyone else getting them?
